windshield install ? ?

so im trying to put my front window back in on my 76 duster ,,, im using the old rubber but its perfect ! mint ,, i clean'd it all and its not hard or dry at all but its soo hard to get in any one have advice how to install this ?

You will get a bunch of different opinions on this but this worked great for me. I have a 70 dart I think it's the same stile. Put the rubber gasket on the glass first then fit a string or twine in the groove of the rubber channel that goes on the body of the car. Make the end of the strings hang down from the bottom corners of the gasket, then lube the entire channel with soapy water or silicone spray. lift the whole thing up and set in the lower windshield frame make sure the strings are in the inside of the car. Then start at one side and pull the string so it grabs the inside lip of the molding and it will start to fold over the metal channel. Go slow and push down on glass from time to time. I did a little on one side then went to the other until i met in the middle (top). I did this by myself and had no problems a helper would have made it even easier. I did not use any sealer on mine, some say thats the way the factory did it. I have not water tested it so I will post the result's when it gets wet. Make sure you put the molding clips in first and good luck with the moldings it's hard not to scratch something.

I'll be the first of many who say "Hire it done by a pro"
If you did use the correct sealant and tryed to pull the gasket and glass into the car with a rope , you would have a mess on the interior.
Use sealant to place the gasket alone on the car. Sit the bottom edge of the glass in the gasket then work up both sides and across the top. If you want to try a rope trick you can. The rope ends would be at door jambs so you would definately need a helper. You will need ample pressure against the glass either way.

Done it this way several times. I would make a suggestion on the old rubber though: rub it down and wipe it clean with some Goop first. The Goop will help soften the rubber, making it more pliable and clean it at the same time.

I usually start at the bottom and gently pull at the rope, making sure it pulls the rubber inward. Sometimes some gentle persuasion is needed to help set the glass. I've scared the hell out of people when they watch me do it...

The Silicone Spray As Listed above is One Of The MOST Important Features of this Install....Dont Be Afraid of Lubing it up with it...

What I Do Is A Little Different.I have tried probably EVERY way ever possible.I Broke a Windshield with the rope once and wont try it anymore(Pressure applied until it cracked in the last 4 inches)...

I Lube The Seal Up..
Install All Clips..
Put Moving Pad Down AND Tape with Blue Masking Tape so it doesnt Move Or Leave residue...
Install Rubber Seal..
Now take Windshield and Place Firmly in the Lower Channel..
I Have a Special Windshield Tool that you set into the channel and pull around as you apply LIGHT pressure to Glass..
I ALSO Go To a Paint House Or Wally World Or Lumber Outlet and buy a few different sizes of Plastic Putty Knives..
Take and Put Silicone Spray On The Putty Knives..
Then Put Into Lower Channel And Work Your Way Around on the outside of the Windshield While applying Light pressure to Windshield..
Do Each Side first from bottom to Top(The Complete Bottom of the windshield should already be in channel)..
Now Work Fom Each Side around the Top Corner about 4 inches or so and then the other side rotating sides until you meet in the middle top..

I had a windshield guy whos been doing them for 30 years tell me to never ever use silicone in a windshield install. He said it traps moisture in there and eventually will rust it out. Not sure if thats true or not but I'd go with the soapy water just in case.

The Silicone Spray goes In the Track Towards The Glass...Never Seen Glass Rust...Sorry I May have been a Little Vague Here..I Sometimes Put A Little Window Sealer in the Outer Track and Then Put The Seal In the Vehicle...THEN Spray The Inner Channel And Put the Window In...
