We have been cleaning up the engine compartment getting ready to have the car painted and just removed the 34 year old wiring. Much of the tape (?) wrapping the wires and harness is deteriorating and looks bad. What is the correct material to use to re-wrap the wires so they look good and stay wrapped? I know it can't be regular electrical tape because that starts to seperate and peel off after time in the heat. What is the best wrap to use and where would I get it? As always, thanks for the help!!!

I don't have my book with me but I believe that Year One sells it. It is not regular electric tape, its more static cling vinyl tape that comes off easier. If I can find my book I'll give you the part number.

holy cow that's pricy. You can find it at the part store near the electrical tape. You can get 3 rolls for that price. It may not look like a lot but it is very stretchy.

That's for a 100 foot roll 1.25 wide, you can also get a 3/4 inch wide roll for 9.95. 1 of the smaller rolls is supossed to do 2 cars. I pulled the note off of the web site.
NOTE: In order to keep this tape from unraveling, GM would wrap the tape around itself and tie it in a knot, snapping off the excess.

You can do what ever you prefer. Rather than wrap mine I ran all of my wiring through heat resistant sleeving. Hard to see in the pic but it worked out really nice.

OHHH. cool. I like the sleeving idea as well because it looks so clean and you can get it in the chemical/heat resistant variety. I hope to use some as well. What size did you use? I can't tell which would be needed. 1/4, 1/2, 3/4" etc. It can be bought cheaper via electrical wholesale outlets than going through summit or Painless wiring. I've heard they make some shrinkable kind too.

Thanks for the quick response everyone!
Xstream, what sleeving are you talking about? The corrogated split stuff?

No, I don't like the corrogated stuff either. What I used came from a factory here that builds transformers for power plants. A friend of mine works there and some how got a 250' roll of sleeving. It is black, looks similar to cloth, will not burn, and is not split. You must undo the wire to slide the sleeving over it. It's about a 1/4 inch in diameter but when you push back on it, it swells enough to go over a battery cable, really cool stuff. I believe I gave what I had left to Fastback 340, maybe he has some picsof his finished job.
