First time posting so sorry if I don't wrong.
I am driving my 84 Dodge d250 3/4 ton for 10 years now but just unless five years ago I started doing my own work on it, so I'm still learning. I ended up stranded somewhere and it was but it was burning up alternators and batteries so I removed all of that and replaced it with a GM one wire alternator. Yes I know should be simple enough but as we all know Dodge is never simple. With the advice of an old hotrod mechanic I took out what wires I was supposed to but there is still nothing happening. I had the starter checked and bought a new battery. Mine has the one wire from the alternator, the cable from the starter and the ignition wire. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
 
Are you still using the stock output wire? It could be that the wire is either open circuit or too high a resistance.

The one wire alternator, it doesn't work the best on cars, they're for farm machinery, but you need to rev it up to excite it and it doesn't sense the charge at where the load is so the voltage may end up being lower.

Simply on the stock alternator, the one field wire (usually the blue one) is 12V keyed and the other is the field control for the alternator. The one on the stud is the output post.
 
The first thing to do was determine WHY it was having issues with alternators and starters. They're separate circuits, in a manner of speaking. One wire alternators are generally a poor idea on stock wiring systems. A 84 truck likely has issues with a 40+ year old wiring harness. Get a volt/ohm meter and learn how to use it properly.

As post #2 says, you need some rpm to excite them. What rpm have you tried? As long as existing wiring has been disconnected & ends insulated, it should not affect operation of the new alt.
