WIW All Original 74 Duster 360 4 Speed Car?

-
I am a little biased as my first car was a 74 Duster 318 auto in black. I have been working on restoring a 74 360 4speed Duster in black for a number of years now. I stopped counting how much money I have spent on it. I probably have 20K into it & I am not done yet. I am not looking at what it may be worth when it is done but doing it for the enjoyment.

I don't think there are many people out there that would think that car is worth 20k+, but I would be looking at it if I wasn't so deep into mine.

There is not a nice quality 1970-1972 on the market for sale anywhere.
I own several and I would be proud to own that car :)

Agreed! I would love to have it also! Not many dusters made I don't like :) A factory 360 4-speed car would be no exception! Sure looks beautiful sitting out when I go through Galena in the summer time!

I see, that '74 360 would be a nice fit to your very fine collection!

74 360 actually has more torque than a 340 in stock form. They rated HP different in 74, so you have to readjust the numbers for the net change. My opinion is that it is without a doubt the rarest and best built Duster in stock form. Inspect it really good to make sure it is a real 360 car. Most that I have seen have different interior than that one. Most also came with a 3.21 gear ratio. Old Car Trader says 22,00 in #1. Show the guy that and subtract for any imperfections below #1 condition.

Just for the record my BONE STOCK 74 360 duster runs 13.70's@ 100ish at the purestock drags. 3.55 auto on 215/70-14 tires. Car will pull 60 foot times in the 1.90 range. It's an excellent package!

So your car is based off the Pure Stock rules or are you saying bone stock meaning all original and untouched car?

I did not know that group was even out there.... I know about F.A.S.T. but thought it was the lone wolf...

I agree about the recent 360 performance posts. I've owned one and driven one pretty hard for a couple of years and will admit that those cars are quick. It won't touch my stock 6bbl Roadrunner in the quarter but it will hang in there for quite some time.

My car was a slant 6 that I built to 360 specs for the PSMCDR race in Stanton MI. I bought a complete 360 duster drivetrain from a rusted out donor. Cam was junk so I replaced it with a correct replacement and had a heads rebuilt with original valves. No new bearings or rings. That motor went 14.50@95ish with 90 psi of compression. The next year I put a new short block together with $100 eBay pistons (H405cp),same uncut heads, same cam, no "tricks". This is its current form. The only thing it has that an original car doesn't is I bought the short(3ft?) TTi exhaust pipes(2.5) and had a muffler shop bend the rest. So it has 2.5 exhaust pipes(1/2 TTi,1/2 compression bent), dynomax mufflers with 2.25 compression bent tail pipes. I guess to answer your question I did build it for purestock but I'm not taking advantage of the rules. For example you are allowed to run 1.5 points of compression over the advertised ratio. The 74 360 was advertised at 8.4:1 so by the rules I could run 9.9 and still be legal. Right now I'm at 8.8:1 with uncut heads and block with .028 gasket.

The best factory time I could find for a 360 duster with auto/3.21's was 15.80's. This seems slow to me means I've had factory 318 2bbls with auto/2.94's go 15.90's. I do know if they could only get 15.80's and was around 86 mph, something serious was holding that car back. I'm not talk'n motor internals either. I ran 15.30's with a D150 100% factory engine (360 tbi) including single exhaust/stock manifolds and 3.21 gears.

Car craft did a project series on one back in the day and I think it ran 14.60's? off the show room if memory serves me.
