1976 Fury Salon (318) car continues to run with key off and key out of ignition. Has just started with this problem.

what is the best way to test the ignition switch?

Determine the power input terminal on the switch and see if there is continuity to the ign out terminal with the key off.
I've seen this, not always the same fault. For some, and I don't recall what brand/vehicle, Wires to/at the starter were shorted together. Back feed kept it powered up.
You'll likely go under your dash first to find a white harness connector from ignition switch to cars harness. You might find a meltdown fault right there. Good luck
