There's a nice farm stand in our town that's been there for years and sells farm fresh picked veggies that are picked each morning. Their produce is usually fresh less than 12 hours off the stalk. They grow it on a farm 45 minutes south of here in Kankakee, IL and truck it up every day....

It usually doesn't open for a couple more weeks, but when I drove by today, I saw it was already open....

It's early in the season, so the corn is a little small, but it looks good and tastes great, so it will be nice by August. The broccoli is also very good. Also, not everything is mature yet, so they keep adding more things as they are available...

I like getting the produce fresh and helping out local farmers. There's nothing like fresh picked food...

I could make a meal out of that corn on a cob by itself...I don't eat any of that green stuff though but my wife would Love it.Love Farmers markets

sheesh - you're pretty excited about a few vegetables, you didn't get this jacked up when you got the kids V8 running... and yea, we know not everything is mature yet - thanks for the news flash...:poke:

We had those places at the swap meets where we used to live, but unfortunately they were all stolen produce out of the local farmers fields.
The cops investigated for two years before doing anything about it, but finally busted the entire family.
They would rent a Uhaul truck on Friday night and would drive out to the fields after dark and load up the truck and then take it to the swap meet Saturday morning.
Made me sick to see people buy from them.

that corn is mighty good put in microwave for 6 min with the shuck still on. Take it out and cut the big end off where the kernels start and grab the silk end and shake the corn out on your plate with no silks on it then butter and salt it. Man it is so easy and delicious!

Man...nothing better than sweat corn! I love the stuff!! There were corn fields surrounding the little town in PA I grew up in. We ate it all the time!

And I just heard about the microwave trick to help shuck it but didn't know you could cook it all the way done. I'll need to try that!

yahoo for you. I gotta drive to central Washington to get good fresh veggys. about a 150 miles oneway, but we bring back a pickup load.
the wifey will let me know when the picken's ready it should be shortly.

Hmmm, that peach looks a little green yet...
That mater looks real good though. I love me a mayo & mater sammich!

I never had fresh corn until I visited my cousin in Texas. She had a neighbor (next door, like 4 miles!!) that grew it and we got some that was about 2 hours off the stalk. Jeez, it was like eating candy corn! We got a farm locally that drops off boxes of random vegetables at our school for subscribers amd we get all sorts of funky fresh veggies now, some are still inedible to me though, fresh or not. Kohlrobi, yuck!

There used to be lots of corn fields in this town also, but now there are but only two small ones left... Most of the farms have been sold off to developers and built up... :(

There are farms closer to the south also, but this farm stand used to have land here locally, but sold most of it to developers and the old field is now a fire station and nursing home.... They kept their stand where it has always been for about 35 years now near my old neighborhood, and have a small pumpkin patch next to the barn here. They have a good customer base that are regulars, like me... We wait all year for them to open in July, and they close every Halloween...

I'm pleasantly surprised that they are open early this year!!!

I'm on the hunt for nearly homegrown also. So far this season we've picked 1 beef stake tomato, 4 of the sweety 100 salad tomatoes, and 6 pods of okra from the back yard. A single roma tomato and a single green bell pepper is slowly growing out there. The squash, egg plant, etc.., has failed miserably.
As for corn.. You aint lived until you've rode on the edge of the tractors bucket and picked corn until there's no room left to sit/put your feet. Then ride a fender or walk back to the farmhouse to grille some while shucking. A chair with a cushioned seat is a blessing after sitting on the edge of that bucket for a time.
