What is everyone using?
Cast block and aluminum heads
I have used fel-pro 1008 on a 340 that never leaked.
Now have cometic's that leak!!!
Any idea's out there in mopar land

If the block and heads were not surfaced properly to run the MLS that's why they leak. You can try heat cycling them a few times if you havent, but if they continue to leak the finish is too rough for them. I only use the 1008s because of the flattened fire ring.

Ya all the big block guys here run the cometic's and work fine.
As for surface it was all done for the mls cometic's and still leak.
Other small blocks have same trouble may just put in the fel pro like I had. But lots of work to do that. Heat cycling them has been done.
Less head bolts on small block also.

I have used the Fel-pro 1008 on my last 3 motors with no problems...and one of them was sprayed with a 150-180 shot of nitrous every pass down the 1/4 for 7 years.

Just some stupid things to check -
Do the head bolts botom out in the holes?
Are the dowels too long?

How bad is/are the leak(s)?

You got 7 years out of a sprayed motor? I am gonna be re-doing my valve guides and seals after one season, but then again I have a 7000 pill and LOVE doing burnouts at full throttle. Might have to reconsider that since it looks like over $500 for the job.

I've run Felpro 1009s on my RB, second set now. Aluminum heads and never a leak - and less than half the price of Cometics.

Ya I had checked the dowels and head bolts {bolts came in kit from indy and are ARP for a eldelbrock head as that is what indy uses to make this head} Not a bad leak but still a leak none the less. But good call moper.

Thanks to all who chimed in on what gaskets they use. The only reason I used comectic was that all my big block buddies use them with aluminum to cast motors.

if you had no problems with the 1008s, why did you switch? my small block has 15-1 comp. and never had a head gasket problem with 1008s.if your on alot of juice or alot of boost then i would use the MLS. but as said before the block has to machined for them.

I have used the Cometic gaskets on my W8 motor and have reused them 3-4 times and never leaked.I spray a lite coat of copper coat on them.I have used the felpro 1102-1 on my W8 but dont like then imprint they leave on the head.I had to resurface the heads because of that.

I had to order new pistons the 2nd week in Jan and finally got them 2 weeks ago and the ring grooves were not machined for the rings I ordered from them and had to send them back and they said it would take about a week after they recieved them and still waiting.Very poor quality control. Will not order pistons from them again ever.Trying to get it ready for mid May.

I just put them on dry maybe thats why.
The only reason in going to comectics was going to a aluminum head.

Yeah, the copper coat helps the pesky seaping type leaks. If that's what you have (like it does it when it's allowed to cool overnight) then the copper coat should work fine.

That sucks! I'm hoping to have my motor together by Sept and on the dyno. My lifter bores are being rebushed over at Weston machine now and got some other small things that I want to change . Good luck with your duster. Mark

I use to push the 1008's fire ring out running 6 psi of boost and a shot of spray on my sb.
I now use copper head gaskets and O-ring the heads with receiver grooves cut into the block.

Yeah Mark!

I never had a piston fail from detonation but when that needle goes past 8,000 RPMs- real bad things happen to piston skirts. LOL

LOL, you have to have run more piston to wall clearence if your spinning it that high, to tight and and they will melt with the boost and juice. i shift mine @8600 and no problems. PM me see you soon.

I had the cosmetics and they leaked also. Problem was that they did not completely seal around one of the water jackets. You could see the impression on the gasket, and the head when I took it apart. So I went with fel-pros instead. 3rd season and no issues so far.

Well hope this helps other SB strokers not have any problems, But I'm still out labor and parts to fix this leak.

.............Use them over like previous stated, spray them with copper coat.....ofcourse i would hate to have to do things over when i carefully thought out and bought the best parts or so i thought, sometimes overthinking is the problem.............kim........

Here is a picture of were these gaskets leak.
Hope no one else has this problem.
cometic gaskets with edelbrock/indy head and 340 block.
