Tell me what you think. Valve lash need adjusted??

I'm sure all 3 are off. I just got the car Saturday. I keep getting pops through the carb too. So the timing needs retarded correct?

first off whats your idle at? sounds fairly high, around 1K...

shut it off and lightly seat the fuel mix screws on the carb, then go about 1.5 turns out...

then start it and re set idle for about 900...

set timing at about 10* and again reset idle...

see where that gets you...

and then yes lash the valves, .010 int/.020 exh HOT on a stock cam, if aftermarket go .018/.018

Idle too high, due to timing. play with timing at lower idle, untl good. Then adjust carb. then check timing advance.

The engine looks recently put together so hopefully it's just a valve adjustment. If that video would have been of a 100K engine i would have suspected you would have had valve sealing issues or possibly burnt valves.

Popping in the exhaust usually is an ignition indicator. 153624 is the firing order. 123456 from front to back. Make sure the firing order is correct. It doesn't sound like it's right.

Firing order is correct. The engine isnt a new rebuild. Hopefully we arent talking burnt valves.

What time frame did it take for the popping to return?

Its a petronix dist. cap and rotor look brand new.

Well that should rule that out. I'm no slant expert and there are members here with a ton of experience so i should probably defer to them. At this point i am curious as to if a slack timing chain could be a issue?

I hope it's not a wiped cam or lifters, but it's acting like it.

Time to check the psi in all cyls...

The idle is set to 800 rpm in idle. When i drop it in gear....It just dies. So aggravating.

well with that pop i wouldn't expect it to idle in gear... take another Vid with the car running and out side... trying to hear how much its loping... thinkin its a comp grind so it should work with a stock converter...

so... i would go back to timing... its gonna like alot of timing... like at least 10* at idle... mines at 28*...

lastly you need to check cylinder pressure... this will give you a rough idea of the compression, which unless they milled it is very low... and a bigger cam makes it worse...

My timing light doesnt read degrees. I have it set at 10* before at idle. So past that, I really have no idea where it would be sitting. I dont have a comp tester, so I'll have to do that tomorrow. I'll get another vid tomorrow for you guys. Thanks for the help.

well go like a 1/4" past the end of the tab (about 5*)

Sounds like an ignition problem to me. I would be inspecting cap and rotor. Might also be a phase problem, where the rotor is between two cap terminals. Has the wiring for the distributor pick-up coil been modified? Is it an HEI module conversion?
