I put on 3 coats of S/S Urethane. The paint has a texture to it. Not sure if that is normal, I doubt it. You can see it in the light kind of like ripples.

looks like it went on dry and/or too much air pressure, or the previous coats didnt have enough flash time between coats. im sure someone else can pinpoint it

I think that's referred to as "orange peel", because of the texture. Someone here can give you the reasons it happened, I'm sure.

Orange peel, happens alot. Yes wet sanding will fix it. Youll need to wet sand and buff several times to smooth that out. Youll use everything from 800 all the way to 3000 grit working from coarse to fine and using good buffing compund. Id take it and have it done at a shop because its really easy to cut through the paint while sanding or burn it with the buffer. Plus its a pain in thr butt and will take several days to do properly

Ouch!
Yep, I will have to say "Lemon" peel!

Did you do the 50-75% overlap during each pass? Looks like you drysprayed it. Too much air pressure-not enough material or wrong reducer didn't allow the paint to flow and/or you moved too fast. How hot was it when you sprayed the paint?

You are gonna have to wetsand with 600 and reapply! That is some serious peel! I really don't think there is enough paint to wetsand and buff. You could always wetsand and apply a clearcoat over it. Alot less work! Since it is Urethane you can get a gallon af urethane clear and be done! Just be careful on the crowns when sanding so you don't take the color off! I would tape the crowns with 1/4" blue fineline tape before you start sanding. Wetsand all of the peel out then clear it.

Wetsanding and buffing will remove too much materials then you won't have enough mills to protect it from the elements. You can get a gallon of clear and hardener for less than $100... Use a SUPER SLOW reducer and be sure you overlap each pass by at least 50% better at 75%.

I sprayed it about 40psi, I didnt use a reducer except on the final coat which I used a medium reducer.

Will the clear take away the peel look and grainy effect? It was about 65 degrees but the humidity was high around 85% I think you are right sanding it down flat and reapplying is what needs o be done. Should I wet sand with 600? How soon can I do this I just painted it yesterday. Im sure I dont need to take it all down just flatten it am I correct?

The reason it happened is the paint dried before "flowing out" either too fast of a reducer or the temp was high or your spray was incorrect, to high air pressure or to far away from surface. I would start over, take the whole car back down to flat paint with 400 and reshoot with the slowest reducer available. If you try to block and buff you are probably going to go thru the paint on the edges anyway. Repainting will be easier. Use base coat/clearcoat if you can. Blocking and buffing clear is much safer.

Looks like it went on dry to me which caused the orange peal. I have a habbit of spraying dry also. It takes some practice to get use to moving slow enough to not spray dry yet fast enough top not run the paint every were.

I think yall are right. I think ill take it back to 600 and shoot again. Also yall are right I probably did move fast.

Looks like a dry issue to me also.

........... I didnt use a reducer..........

Ahh! You have to reduce all paint. Not sure about your product but most urethane single stage is 2:1:.5 meaning 2 parts paint, 1 part hardener, .5 part reducer. You must mix with the reducer so the paint will flow. Then on the last coat mix it 2:1:1. Thats is the issue here.

Give it a few days then you will have to wetsand with 600 to get all of the "Peel" out and the surface smooth again. Then reapply the color. That is unless you want to buy clear. If you get the clear you just need to get the peel out and not break through the color then shoot it.

You have to get 98% of that peel out or it will show later. It won't be as bad but will need a cut and buff for sure after it is resprayed.

Beginners mistake! Don't be bothered by it!!!! Fix it and continue.

Well its fixable and I still have over a half gallon left. I think this time around ill get some help. Thanks for the replies fellas. I have a good Idea what I need to do. But I want a quality finish so I guess i need to get to it. Can I get some discs in 600 grit and use the RO Sander?

It was in the 60s when he sprayed it.

He stated he didn't use reducer until the last coat. He must reduce every coat.
I would get you a gallon mixing jug and mix a full gallon with the hardener and reducer. Then on the very last coat add .5 additional reducer to help open the prior coats of paint and let it flow out better.

Hand sand it with a good flat block if I were you! Orbitals will more than likely remove to much material too fast! Using tools will more than likely screw your bodywork up too.

Yup, I missed that. I fell his pain. Im pretty sure when I sprayed my epoxy I mixed it 4:1 instead of the 1:1 it called for, LOL Oops.

But like my friend just told me. "You know why its gonna look nice ? Cause your gonna do it twice !"

i was worried yesterday when he said he wasnt using reducer.

Wish I could have caught him before he started!:violent1: I was watching preseason Football.

O'well, more work! I'm sure he'll "Git-R-Dun" lol.

More work means more "Pride in your Ride"!:D
