Ok, so i here it all the time, "340's just dont make good torque". Well thats true, sorta. We got a call from a guy on here, His name is Pat. He wanted a streetable 340, but wanted some grunt and didnt want to go with a stroker.

We talked about this and that, he had some parts to work with. Some good some not so good.

We made the heads a little better, RPM's, looked like they were decked with a belt sander. Valve job was not good at all, guides way to tight, bla bla bla. We fixed all that.

He had some nice Crane rockers, had to replace a few due to rust and pitting on the roller tips, no big deal.

The block he had needed a light bore and hone to make it right. The #1 main cap was messed up, so I got one out of the "cap box" (never throw them out!), found a good one. Line bored/honed with studs and its good to go.

Went with RaceTec pistons, with custom ring pack, SUPER NICE!

Custom hydraulic roller cam. 227/231 with .530" lift

RPM AG intake, QF 750 annular carb.

So how much torque can a 340 make with pump gas 9.7 to 1 and a nice engineered package??

455TQ at 4300rpm. It made 450+TQ from 4000-5000rpm and 410+TQ from 3-6000rpm! Now for the Top End Power

470HP at 5800rpm and it carried 470HP from 5800-6000rpm, thats where we stopped the pulls.

Now this is not a stroker, its a .040" over 340.

And its a total street sleeper. Idle smooth at 850 rpm with 15 inches of vacuum

We also ran it with the New FBO ignition module up against our MSD 6al. The FBO made 3hp more and 5tq more over the MSD. This little thing kicks ***! And yes, We are a dealer for them!!! Call US to order! Check it out here http://www.4secondsflat.com/Ignition.html

I'm the owner of this engine.

I do have to say that I'm still trying to get my jaw off the floor. When Mike and I talked about it, my goal was to make a nice street engine that made about 425 crank hp.

I think we're both pretty amazed and pumped about this one. Now, admittedly, this is a slightly more expensive engine (parts wise) than some would like to build, the results speak for themselves. I bought a lot of used/open box parts and brought them in, and Mike went over them with a fine toothed comb.

I would write more, but I'm still too excited. :-D
 
You should thorw up a vid so we can all hear how good she sounds... just sayin

You know I love Hemi's but my first hot rod was a 340 Volare! That's right, I bought a new Plymouth Volare Road Runner with a 12 month or 12,000 mile warnentry... On the 1 year 1 day anniversary I pulled the engine and installed a 340. I thought my Dad was going to shoot me! I still love those engines. I'm picking up my 340 from the machine shop on August 5 Th.. My birthday present to myself. Not sure what I'm putting it in, but I'll have it ready when i do!
 
Those are GREAT numbers , especially for a street reliable 340 , WOW is right .
 
Great numbers for a easily streetable package. Pump gas friendly, idles like Grandma's car, and has 470 HP. Good job Mike and congrats. Pat!
 
Cool. I don't know if this would be shared here, but I'd like to know how much building an engine like this would cost. Assuming the owner didn't already have any parts, just buying everything except the good block new off the shelf. (and having you build it of course).

Makes me even more interested to see what my 340 will do. Same compression ratio, .060", with ported 308's (264 cfm @.500") and a Lunati 60404 276/284 .513"/.533". Same intake, RPM air gap.

Probably still giving up some flow to the RPM's, and of course the roller cam in that 340 makes a big difference.

Great work! Now go embarrass some brand x'ers!

I will get a price for you guys too. And with a solid roller and more port work, Im betting it would make 550HP and closer to 500TQ and Still be Streetable!
 
This motor sound so damn close to my build! Mine being .30 over and a hyd roller cam of 231/239 .535"/.550" with ported eddy heads.
 
I see two happy campers in this thread :thumleft:. All others on the Michigan streets......not so much....lol.

Nice job Mike! 15" of vacuum and close to 1.4hp per inch.......awesome!!!
