Diesel Dodge Dart Concept

Actually mitsubishi diesels in the 70s were avail in dodge trucks and 1 ton vans. No turbo they were slugs.

A partial quote

"And if you wanted a diesel, you could get one too, in 1962. Not commonly known, English-built Perkins diesels had been installed in numerous Chrysler vehicles exported to Europe in the fifties, and even a few in North America. In 1962, it was a standard option for the first time in the domestic Dodge pickups, but only some 1000 were sold.
It was a 354 CID six,"

.................and this AllPar page

and they were evidently used somewhat more in heavy trucks

They are just pulling $4000 out of the air. It does make a little more torque then the gas v6 gas but in a 1/4 mile they are similar with the gas having more HP and lighter weight. Also diesel gets 29 while the gas now gets 25 (16% better) which is great until you swing by the gas station and find diesel costs 27% more then gas. Maybe it will last longer, the Cummins does but this ain't no Cummins, maybe it will have higher resale but that depends more on how the above works out. A ford 6.0 diesel as an example is much less reliable and higher maintenance costs then their 5.4 gas although neither is a gem.

6.0's are junk.

The difference you'll find is when you start looking at real world MPG number especially when working the vehicle. My cummins averages 23-25 MPG.

Always wanted to try misting some propane into the intake on that Ribbit.....

Still have the engine, it's not too late.....

Propane is an additional fuel. It will yield more power but also yield higher EGT's.

In a diesel nitrous lowers EGT's and makes more power. Similar to a biger turbo.

The 4BT is a really TALL engine. I don't think the hood would close.

Please dont ruin a classic mopar by putting a non mopar engine in it. If you want a fun daily driver that you can bastardize get a classic vw bug and swap a mazda rotary or a subaru boxer in it.

Yer not gonna like me much then. If this TBI 170ci / thing doesn't work out I'll be scanning CL looking for a Merc OM-617 turbo-diesel to put in front of the T5.

BT, DT with the basterdized ACVW. It was fun, but I've had enough.

VW motor in a Mopar that's just wrong...

Ever look in an 81-83 Omni/TC3/024? VW, thats right....not just wrong. Although a little odd since the car was challenging the Rabbit at the time.

4BT's are not that expensive as CA companies are dumping them in favor of emissions motors. Pick-a-part got more than a hundreed of them on pallets and were selling them out the door for $800 IIRC, CA is looking into smogging even these in conversions so they are becoming orphans in the Golden State.

Please read threads before posting in them

RAM 1500's are coming out with a new "baby" diesel, which would be a better fit. It will be interesting to see if the aftermarket develops parts for it. The electronics could be a pain in the conversion.

2014 Jeep GC's are available with a V-6 3.0 turbo diesel, 240 HP/420 torque. Recently, I drove one and must say its performance was impressive. I guess its a stretch but the new eco diesel as it's called could be considered a mopar engine. Try fitting that into one of our A-bodies.......

I'm hard pressed to believe that the 3.0TD is bigger than a hemi

was what I was reffering to.

Who is making the eco diesel?

Cummins as much as everyone associates it with dodge is not a dodge product.

Who is making the eco diesel?

VM out of Italy. Here is a clip from Wiki pedia

VM Motori S.p.A. is a diesel engine manufacturing company in Cento, Italy, in Emilia-Romagna, an Italian region which is also home to Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Pagani and Ducati. Established in 1947, the company has had several owners in the last twenty years, with Fiat becoming the owner in 2013.

They bring about $2500 around here sitting on a pallet and about $2600 still running in an all aluminum step van! Figure out the math on that one. I don't know how many I could haul on a trailer but round trip is 4000 miles at 14 mpg with diesel hovering around $4.25 so that's around $1200 in fuel so I guess I could haul 4 of them home and make it worth my while.

Diesel sucks gay ballsacks. Especially now when diesel is so much higher than gas it removes any benefit from better mileage and makes you about even with gas cost wise. They are slow to rev and who the hell wants to smell like diesel fuel all the time? That **** gets everywhere and there's nothing you can do to stop it.

RRR, you should go for a ride in a hopped-up diesel truck. Drove a friend's '03 with a mid level 'tune' on the chip and that CTD crew-cab short bed lifted 4x4 on 35's thought it was a sports car. Maneuvering in traffic? No Problem, point and shoot and it got it done. Usually did it so well that brakes were required to keep from rear-ending the guy in front of me. I'm guessing somewhere in the range of 600 HP and 800 ft-lbs. They don't need to rev to make power, my own 12 valve (@ 250HP & 600Ft-Lbs) is redlined at 3000 and I've never, ever gotten it over ~2250. Don't need to.

Since working in an R&D dyno facility developing the little opoc and the tubro for the mid-size opoc, the smell of diesel fuel doesn't even register. But I get where you're coming from on that one.

I OWNED an 04 F250 6.0 Powerstroke. 4" exhaust, cat delete, cold air kit, Diablo tuner. I know what they run like. Besides all that, I've turned wrenches since 1974, so I've been around some diesels. I stand by what I said. Even with all that done to mine, a good hot gas engine would out rev the hell out of it. I didn't say out run.

High revs are like spinning tires, they don't generally lead to low ET's. My 2001 Cummins 2500 would outrun most stock 383 Roadrunners and get 20 MPG to boot and I havnt even started modding it. It does take some getting used to when your on the highway at 2600 rpm and the speedo is up around 90+.

The Dodge Caravan available in South Africa came with a diesel I don't know the specifics of the motor but its Chrysler maybe would make a good project

Who said anything about high revs? I said quick revving.

There was a guy at mmw indy a couple of years back brought a 68 dart ( I think) .he had dropped a 4bt into it custom chassis the whole nine yards said it got 32 mpg from quad cities in Illinois to indy with no problems a hood would fit but he had a temp stack running up out of the engine bay.

Here's the above mentioned dart.I was wrong about hood fitting.
