If it has a groove around it just find an appropriately sized E clip at the hardware store. If it's not grooved it will take the same type retainer as on the post next to it IMO.
 
Since the car is back on its wheels, I'm wanting to get the doors, fenders, hood and deck lid together somewhat whilst I await available funds to do the quarters. The quarter skins wont wrap into the door jamb or the trunk gutter so I can align the doors to the old quarter body line and go forward.
First I had to repair a pair of reject fenders I bought and fix a ribbon of rust on the bottom of the drivers door skin. I cut out just the rust from the door skin and use the piece I cut out as a pattern for the patch. My flux core welds are not pretty but they are solid. I was able to grind them clean on the outside and the inside. I then spray rust reformer on the inside of the skin and coat the repair with urethane seam filler.
The passenger fender had a patch cut out of it where the marker light area is, but I had the fender that the car came with and there was not rust in the marker light area so I was able to weld the piece back in place. There is a marker light hole, but I put a piece of packing tape over it from the back to help eliminate sag when the filler draped into the hole. I can cut it out later with a rotozip.
I don't have much experience with filler, so I'm using autoparts store spreaders and going with light coats and sanding them by hand with 60 grit paper on a paint stir stick.
I was able to get a second skim of filler on my cowl patch as well.
Next I'm going to figure out how to hammer out the dent in the drivers side rocker. Going to try and avoid getting a slide hammer at all costs.:violent1: Isn't amazing how the original factory paint has runs in it as is evident in the rocker photo.....

Your better off hanging your doors and aligning them before you hang the quarters anyways . That way you have something to go by when you do , do the quarters . Mud , you gotta love working with that . lol Your doing the right thing by only using a little at a time and then sanding it down and then adding more . Your going to waist a little more but were your not experienced with it , your better off . Whatever you do , Make sure you mix it good and "don't" use to much hardener . Do yourself a favor and invest in a couple of sanding blocks . If you shop around you should be able to find a good deal on them . The two your going to need and use the most are the short block and a long board for the bigger areas . Go in long strokes if possible . For now in place of the short one you could even use a block of wood you have laying around . Also a helpful hint for the short block to save some money is , don't buy the little packages of sand paper that only fit the short block . By a sleeve of regular sized paper and cut it in half . Then you will have two piece's that will fit the short block per piece .
 
Thanks Bear! What about that nasty dent in the drivers rocker? I hate the thought of using a slide hammer. Being an amateur and a true sledge hammer mechanic, the though crossed my mind of using a 1-1/2" holesaw in the floor right behind the dent so I could use a maple dowel to tap the dent out from the inside. When I'm done with the dent I can weld the cutout closed.....
 
Honestly , I think you'd be making more work for yourself by trying to drill wholes behind it . That's a tough spot to get at and your going to have to work it . It wont just pop out like that . Not were it is . How good have you gotten with that welder of yours ? I know you don't have one of those electric dent pullers . So you could use the dent puller you have and then weld up the wholes after you've gotten the curse out of it . Just if you do that then go with the body line and work it a little at a time and don't try to get it out in one big pull .

lol , I kinnda thought so . If it makes you feel better , your not alone . I have a dent similar on the upper edge of the back of the cab on my Warlock .
 
To anyone who's wondering why I changed my DusterDaddy screen name, my wife and kids always hated it and both my teenage boys are using the thread for different projects in school and wanted me to change it. So after being asked by my father in law what I loved most about working on the car, I thought for a minute and said " in a lot of ways it makes me feel like I'm 17 again."

So I started thinking, everyone in my house busted my chops about DusterDaddy, and I wanted the screen name to convey how I feel about that old car out in the Garage. And that as they is that....

After a great morning with my wife and kids and some running around, I sent my wife out to enjoy her gift certificate at the spa.
I then was able to get some odds and ends done on Misty.
I cleaned and primed the hinge side and bottom of both doors getting them ready for color. I've done the hinge side of the jamb in the color and and I'll do the rest of the door edges and jambs once the doors are back on the car.
Also got the back of the fenders cleaned and coated with rust reformer ready for undercoating.
I hope to get the base coat on the door edges tomorrow....

Got the hinge end and the bottom of the doors sprayed with color.
It will be nice to get them back on the car soon.
I need to get a camera! My Iphone does a decent job but not great a quality photo

Thanks for saying so Bear...It works out that way because the $500+ we need for the quarter skins is nowhere to be found right now, so we keep going with doing things that will keep us moving forward and make the project be nice in the long term.

Those quarter skins are the last major purchase needed to put her back together that is unfunded right now...
 
No problem . I give credit were credit is due . And you definitely have it coming . I know what your saying about working with what you have right now . I've learned along time ago to work with what I have . That's why my Warlock project is going kinnda slow right now . But on the bright side , I have been doing a few things to the Dart . Just to bring it to the next level . I know I'm selling it , but it's feels nice making it that much nicer . If you know what I mean ?
 
I know what you mean. My son sometimes gets frustrated when I'm budget minded and don't just charge the quarters on the plastic. But I stick to my guns and we save and find other stuff around the house we don't need and we'll sell it to raise money for the project...
 
That's how I started selling my pre 93 Dodge truck parts . It not only helps with the bill's but it helps fund my addiction ( I mean my automotive hobby lol ) .I'm one of those people that if I don't have the cash for something that I don't need then I don't get it . He'll learn as he gets older that sometimes you have to wait for the things you really want . You just need patients . And the winning lottery ticket wouldn't be bad either . lol
 
Today I put the doors back on their hinges and wire brushed out the bottom of the door cavity and sloshed in 3 HEAVY coats of rust reformer " just in case"

The driver door had a 2" wide x 26" long patch butt welded in near the bottom of the skin.

I like the idea of the rust converter paint soaking into the crease where the skin wraps onto the door.....

Started to plan getting the front fenders on. I needed to post in the body/interior forum so I could get the coil springs for the hood put on properly. I'm sure I'll get expert help.

I've decided that it will be easier for me to finalize the body filler, sand and prime the panels while they are on the car. I've prepped and primed the back and inside of everything.

I'm also going to detail the inside of the door frame and complete the sanding and prep of the door edges and jamb. I painted the hinge side and the door bottom as well as the hinge side of the jamb before I put them back on....:-D

I hear ya on budget..what I tell the kids is that I am willing to do this..if you want different, when you leave the house and are making your own money then have at it.. :)

On the hinge pins, I didn't trust the original style clips. I have heard they fail and cause a lot of damage. I put the clips on, then a washer then cross drilled the pin and put a cotter pin through it. Also keeps everything tight so it maintains alignment.

I agree, I picked up cotter pins over the weekend. Wouldn't want to need reach up inside the fender after taking off the splash shields trying to put it back together if something came loose.

Inside the passenger fender is that antenna base reinforcement. I was was practicallt ruster away, so I cut it out and quickly fab-ed up a new one. I'm just wondering if I should run a thick bead of urethane adhesive in the space between the new reinforcement and the top edge of the fender???
