Caution - Tale of a long distance slacker

-
My story, drove 1hr 45 min to meet him, arrived early, stayed way pass the appointed time, NO SHOW
Called many times no answer.
I did finally acquire the console we agreed upon through
a mutual friend of his.
I've been in negotiations with him on a set on disc brakes and A-arms up until about a week ago.
I've never seen him in person but spoken to him many times on the phone, was never of the opinion after the first transaction that he was on the level.

Think I almost bought a 69' Barracuda off this guy last year on Cracklist, it was a really great deal too with all the included parts, back half car, narrowed Dana, Two built 727's, trans brake, stroker motor etc, etc, etc, for like 4 bills. It was such a good deal my internal Be Alert Alarms were going off like crazy. I actually talked to the guy and he said his buddy gave him the car and he didn't know much about it. I asked for some more pics and he promised to get me some the next day which he never did and I just shined the deal on. I refuse to beg people to take my money and if the correspondence ain't professional the deal more then likely won't be either.

He's kind of shady as in I would only deal face to face.
I can elaborate a little later.
I've had some dealings with him.
I'm headed out the door right now.

Kinda???
You would still deal with this piece of crap?

PAYPAL only

Oh, I'm sure his Paypal is dormant, he can't get to the garage to picture parts due to his illness, and his wife is bedridden also! Not too bedridden to get the Instagram, but certainly can't make it to the garage!!

Grumpiscreature (the member that stiffed Leanna) is from Ohio aswell, not saying anything bad about or good members from Ohio but this makes two. Makes me wonder if they are working together under cover and with new user names already

DO NOT SEND ANYONE MONEY ORDERS --- EVER! Whoa Whoa Whoa there Joey!! Not everyone is a scammer and since I dont have paypal you are basically lumping me into a catagory with the few bad idiots who scam people. I am very honest and try to sell parts to fund my projects as well as help as many people with theirs with my parts that I removed with more blood sweat and tears than it might be worth. Cosgig is my brother and many of you have dealt with him and I can tell you if he thought I was scamming anyone he would be the first one over here kicking my azz. I have no problem giving my info to someone who might be skeptical about sending money orders. Just saying! its a bad rap when its a "DO NOT" opinion.

I thought grumpuscreature was a friend of yours from way back when you first got your car Mike?? Is this not the case? Does he not also have a wife who was on here for a while?

I agree with Greg here, postal money orders are backed by the federal govt and the postal service takes an unkindly view of people who abuse that system! This clown is using the new tried and true method of Instagram that scammers now prefer! If it were a postal money order, I do believe you would have some pull with the Feds to help straighten this out! Paypal does not always have your back, as a matter of fact Ive heard many people say that Paypal doesnt have your back at all!!

I also agree that I would be over kicking my brothers butt if he ever tried to scam anyone by using a money order to rip them off, but I don't have to worry about that because he is as honest and trustworthy as I am, which may not be a good analogy!!!

Sorry to say, but the OP here ignored some major roadblocks in this deal! Never post a wanted ad, that seems to be the first way a scammer with low/zero posts can link on to you....never send money by Instagram, especially to a low/zero poster....never deal with anyone on the web that doesn't have a reputation amongst the peers of the site you are dealing with...and always send any money by a secured method!! Even then there is a chance you'll get scammed...think Ply30!!!

Sorry the OP got scammed, but the parts are not worth the risk!! Geof

Yes, David would call from time to time along with his (now Exwife) , then I started getting weird calls from him back last spring, and his ex wife would call and say all the bad things David did.. I cut the cord you could say, then he came on here with some wild eyed ideas for my car when I was going V8 and I got a few not so nice pm's because I would not answer them, Yep, he went off on me to a couple member because of me not answering ..
We did allot for him and his ex wife and raised money for heater and Christmas gifts for them I am sure you remember, I hope they are fine but I hope we don't fall for another scam here Geof, I am so glad I have met a bunch of very fine members here :color: I have been blessed in more ways then one here and I just want to do my part on keeping the truth as I see it, and not fabricate it at all.. Your Arkansas friend still on the hill and never changing :color:

Yep !! paypal don't always have your back Ask my Wife #-o and
And yes this was a good analogy

All - Thanks, yes I know I have been had, why I came to the forum, I really wanted to give the guy the benefit of the doubt.

And by deleting the PM, I screwed the forum, so that I apologize for, has no consequence to me directly, had no value.

Joey - Actually, I believe his user name was something close to that. And thanks, I will be calling the good Captain on Monday. I have been following up with WalMarts money gram, at least shut that avenue down for him.

Seems this guy has had a past - nice thing about putting it in this forum is for the Google and Bing searches.

Thank you all for the support

Not necessarily, I think, with the help of another member that had been in dealings with him, it was narrowed down. Same Chance Copp name came up.

In the future, I would recommend keeping all PM's until the transaction is complete and both parties are satisfied. I know I do, as well as keeping the ad thread if applicable in my bookmarks until I have received my stuff, or the party I sold to gets theirs.

Never Post A Wanted Ad ?

While true that never posting a wanted ad will limit your exposure it will also limit your potential ability to obtain the parts you covet. Most of my Purchases and Sales have been a result of responses to a member's needs.

While "Ply30" is an exception to a long time member gone bad I would certainly think that dealing with tenured member's in general has less risk. Not to say that somebody that joined five minutes ago is necessarily going to rip you off it's just that there is less of a track record.

As always in life: Caveat Emptor

Well, maybe I should amend that, but if you place a wanted ad, scammers know exactly what you are looking for, and of course they can say that have that particular item, or items! Maybe if it were just a $20 part, or something obscure it would be harder to scam someone due to lack of knowledge of the value of obscure parts, but when you put out a wanted ad, you're giving them information right up front as to what to scam on! Yea, its hard not to do when you really need something, but couple it with the other red flags of the typical scam deal and I think its pretty easy to read a scam!! Geof

I see no problem placing a wanted ad, although I do agree with you Geof, it can make it easier for someone to target you.

The big thing for me is to proceed cautiously, I look at post count, I look at whether the respondent just PM'ed me, or actually posted in the ad, chances are good if they don't post in the ad with "I have that" or PM sent or something of that nature, it makes me leery.

I have seen a few things for sale recently, that I was interested in, but the poster was new and had no feedback, I passed. That's not to say there would be a problem, but it's just part of my "proceed with caution" mentality.

I too was caught up in a deal gone bad on another site some years ago and ever since I am cautious. I did finally get my parts, but it took tracking him down, calling the local Sheriff Dept, AND through My Space (remember that?) I was able to contact his Dad whom put the proverbial boot in his keester.

From FB, that is Chance Copp who has numerous friends in Chillicothe (?) Ohio. 99.9% sure that it is.

Dennis

Yeah, I would agree.

I like this quote he put on there, perhaps he could take a bit of his own advice.

Some people need to reach the highest branch before they see its the wrong tree!

Gentlemen,
Respectfully, there are a lot of generalities on what "to and not to do" and I am very appreciative of that and think these are good rules of thumb. As an adult, I realized the risk I took. Bottom line is this person is a fraud and has unethical behaviors and the focus should be how to minimize this for the next person.

I am not going to get my parts or the $150 - However as a group with can learn and protect ourselves for future.

I agree "As always in life: Caveat Emptor" (Hemioutlaw).

I think some of the commentary is doing just that, not necessarily directed at you.

Also I wouldn't rule out not getting anything back, just yet anyway. Follow through with contacting the local LE in that area, maybe something good can come from it.
