Its time for me to change the oil in the 70 Dart (225 slant six),I was wondering what filters are considered to be the best construction and filtration wise. I would like the slant to last as long as possible.I will be using Valvoline VR-1 racing oil as it still has the Zddp our flat tappet cam engines need.

I keep hearing that Fram filters are crap and that they use cardboard baffles inside,I am not sure if this is true anymore and Fram has improved them, but the guys at the auto parts stores seem to have nothing good to say about them and its best to err on the side of caution. I have heard that Wix makes a very good filter part 51515 is the one shown for the slant six. but they also have a Bosch and one with a synthetic fiberglass filter media made by Mobil 1.

I figured I would check and see what you guys are running. any advice would be appreciated.

I use the premium WIX filters O'Reilly's sells for my small block stroker and everything else I do oil changes on. No complaints in the years I've been using them.

Made in the U.S.A! (According to the label)

I too have used Wix exclusively since about 1980 or so. As with others I'm keeping my eyes open, the "foreign made" deal does not look good. Guys, we need to complain, make noise and write letters.

Baldwin and "used to be" Hastings have always been good, "if" you can find them. They were never big around here, but I hear Purolator is a good filter

Thanks for all the input guys. Seems like Wix is a safe bet. CARQUEST has a supposedly premium filter by Wix that is the same as the NAPA gold. So I guess I will go with that one. I didn't realize they were made in China though...kinda sad we cant even make simple things like an oil filter in America anymore.

I had thought about the Mopar brand filters too that Scooby67 mentioned, but had heard they were made by Fram.

Not sure if this comment was meant for me or not. If so I was unaware that anyone had asked me a question. I didn't see one posted here.

To quote Maxwell Smart "Sorry about that Chief...missed it by that much",lol! I must not be fully awake yet.

I didn't see a listing for the Wix racing filter for my car, actually on the Wix site they only list one filter for the Slant Six engine in my year the 51515

I had forgot to ask,is it true that there are certain filters that have an "anti-drain back" valve" to prevent the oil from draining back into the pan every time the engine is shut off? I saw someone recommend WIX 51068 ? Can anyone confirm this is true?

Any filter properly built to fit the engine should be fine. A 51515 (long) or 51068 (short) are both proper for Chrysler traditional V8s

I was in O'Reallys the other day asked them "what they knew" about Wix over seas. Of course, "no." But they DID say they were "scaling way back" on the amount of Fram they stock and sell, LOL

A lot have the anti-drain back. If your /6 doesn't have a stand pipe, use the WIX 51806 but, the 51068 will work. I just prefer the stand-pipe version.

I use Wix or Napa black filters made by Wix. Nowdays some Wix filters are made in China and the word isn't out whether the quality has suffered. Here's a good thread about the subject. http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=229397&highlight=oil+filter&page=2

Wix HAS gone global, as have every other parts mfgr on the planet,
Single Most important caveat here however...
Wix --- North American Production --- is made in the USA, & DOES NOT SUFFER from
the ... mmmm... latency of overseas quality control groups.

Just to verify,
Spend $20? & cut open similar Fram & Wix filters...

Wix will make a believer out of Ya.

end of rant.

Good lord this question AGAIN !!!! Walmart sales mopar filters for less - black with the mopar M . I think my uncle said they're made by Purolator. I use it on my new stroker motor for drag racing, no problem.
