Whats the deal with 340s?

-
I've owned much of all. I did a mild 340/360 comparison. Here is what I did and the results. Used the same 750dp Holley, same dual plane intake, same 340 J heads, same cam (MP . 280/.474), connected to the same 2400 converter/727 in the same 3300 lb Dart with 3.91's. I did replace the pistons in the 360 to get the compression ratio the same.
340 ran 13.60's
360 ran 13.30's
340 cost 200.00 for a builder core (good deal from a friend)
360 cost 25.00 from a dodge pickup on it's way to the bone yard.
No, not claiming this is all tale. Just reporting this experiment.

The 340 SHOULD have had a different converter and a different gear ratio. Then it would have kicked the 360's ***.

Horsepower is horsepower. Think for a minute. I have a 340 that makes 500 HP at 6000 and you have your 360 that makes 500 HP at 5800. The 340 will kick the 360's *** EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Horsepower is horsepower. And horsepower is KING. The fact that most guys STILL don't know how to use it doesn't make the statement wrong.

And don't even start me on BSFC. There might be a war.

HORSEPOWER RULES!

Looking at what you wrote with the 2 engines making the same HP I'd bet the 360 to win when both cars have exactly the same equipment behind them since the 360 makes the power sooner and more torque.

I have a 71 Dart with about 500 hp 360 that will be in Bakersfield in Sept...Bring YOUR 500 hp 340.....

I will even send ya some gas money to get there...

Should be easy picking for ya....got ladder bars..no 4 link...off the shelf flat tappet cam..not from Racer Brown...uneven deck heights between each bank...open chamber Eddy heads...and a Woman Driver...

I dont even think it quiet makes 500 hp...the engine is 11 yrs old too...taking candy from a baby...

so you can not say you did not know what car it is ..LOL

Yellow Rose, I just did a simple experiment with equally and mildly built motors (340/360). Yes, the 340 would have ran better with a better converter and gears. Guess what??? So would have the 360. How do I know??? I put a 10 inch Street Fighter converter behind the 360 and went 12.9's without changing anything else. I like both motors, I don't have a dog in this fight. In mild street form with traveling gears, I go 360 because Torque Matters too.

I will also offer this point of view. If your going dollar for dollar and on a lower budget, the 318 may actually beat the 340. Say a guy bought a duster with no motor. If his budget limits him to under 2k, he may go faster with a 318. Why? He can buy a good running 318 magnum for 300.00 bucks. Put a cam, EQ heads and air gap intake and should have money left over of the 2k. He will pay 1k just for a complete, non-running 340 that turns by hand. Just sayn'

Drag your junk **** to me. Bring cash.

Otherwise, shut yer pie hole.

Your torque loses to my gear and my RPM.

Figure it out. No body, I mean nobody builds engines for RACING with stroke and torque. Asscar don't do it (they even have a MINIUM stroke length.

You are fighting physics. Stroke length has little to do with power. Cylinder heads, bore area and rod to stroke ratio age more to do with power than stroke. All the big strokes do is lower the RPM range.

That's why we have transmissions. If torque was all that, you'd have single gear drive trains. It's cheaper. But it won't work.

At idle a 340 sounds like rocks rattling inside a metal drum and when you wind them out they have a loud and constant metallic sound. Hard to put into words obviously but I bet someone out there knows what I'm talking about.

Exactly. Just like a magazine. Your test methods are flawed. Therefore, your results are flawed.

I'm not picking on you. Just stating FACTS. Poor test methods produce junk results.

NO :realcrazy: LOL

LOL Subscribed !!!

You guys can piss and moan all you want, I have a mildly built 340 in my 70' Dart, it runs real good, I love it and will never sell it.

Not picking on you, either. But I'll state some facts. Not everyone wants a 5200 stall converter and 4.88 gears in their street car. Most don't want to turn 4000 rpm's to do 55 mph. I wouldn't take a car like that on a 10 mile cruise. Had a street car once with 4.30 gears and 3200 stall. I HATED IT! So guess what???? Torque plays a factor in this type of car. Period. That is why they make stroker kits and add length to the crank. If your theory was right, everyone would be DE-STROKING their 340's to make them 300's and REALLY go fast.... that's it! De-stroke the 340 to a 300, run 5.13 gears and a 5500 stall with a 320 duration cam and you'd have the perfect highway cruis'n street car...... :D

My torque looses to your gear?
But both engines have the same trans, converter, gear, tires, body, etc.... Identical cars.
The physics have the 340 revving up quicker & producing more HP at a higher rpm. That's it.
The 360 should produce more torque and Max HP at a lower rpm by a few hundred.

NASCAR teams have engines with varying strokes to suite the track as well as gears and n the trans and rear diff.
A one engine fits all is not the case. Also running the min. Stroke possible would be choice of the team but that dose t mean each engine is running the NASCAR min. stroke.

Your argument is flawed.

But please do ask me that one missing question of my opinion.

Yellow rose, 318willrun also makes a good point. Often you will reply with a answer that is more geared to a race like set up. No argument when the shoe fits.

Well, for you it's an excellent door stop.
LMAO!!!!
