Exhaust cutouts

Been looking at installing cutouts on my car. Got to chatting with a buddy and he told me he and another fellow are marketing a new style of cutout that works properly. What I mean by properly is when in street mode they direct all the gasses out the exhaust like there isn't a cutout there. In other words there's no turbulence due the conventional Y pipe design's shortcomings and when in open mode they they direct all the gasses out the cutout. Here's a couple links. Always like to see improved upon products. I only watched the video so far but do you know if there are any plans for an electric version of his design?
 
I think it's a great design. Definitely beats out the standard type cut outs. BUT.... and I'm only being honest...I think the time involved for "the switch" is too much. Under the car, 8 nuts and bolts off then on again. Most guys can drop their pipes with the same effort. I know I can. Most guys want to turn it on and off like a light switch. Pull into the cruise, make a racket. Pull out and quiet it back down...

That being said, if they could figure out an electrical transition, I'd be a customer. I wish those guys all the best and a big kudos for a solid design!
 
little late to the party i think... no one these days seem to be interested in manually opening the cut outs.. most opt. for the electric ones.. simple switch inside the car and they are open or closed..
 
I have been crawling under my car with a wrench and channel locks for about 5 years now. This winter the electric set is going on. For me it wasn't so much about the pain of crawling under the car but there are plenty of times where I need to put the caps on and the pipes are just too hot to mess with. Open exhaust is really fun when you are cruising around all night and causing trouble but when you are pulling into church on Sunday morning you may want it to be a little more tame.
 
Electric is the only way to go.

Some like No-weeds and Kirk Racing have linear actuators on them that allow you to tune the loudness of the pipes. A little growl or a thundering roar!

Stay away from the ones that open fully or do not allow you to adjust from mild to wild.

IMO,,,,CUTROAT for the most power open exhaust racing,,, ELECTRIC for "noise makers" due to the turbulence issue in your beautiful mandrel bent expensive exhaust system. I've considered what would happen putting the y pipe in backwards for that reason since its just for noise. Somebody needs to dyno a good exhaust system before and after installing a closed y pipe. lol

Ahhh my car ran the same through 3" exhaust as it did with open headers.

Some cut outs are either full open or full shut.

Some are progressive in that you can have them full open or shut, and anything in between. I usually just crack mine open a bit when driving and full open when I want to annoy bikers. :D
 
I guess if your racing competitively, then why have any pipes at all? I mean a beautiful, mandrel bent, expensive exhaust system would do nothing more than add weight. Weight is the real enemy of speed.

I would venture to guess that a tiny bit of turbulence isn't enough to matter to most of the people who drive their cars to the track. It's really all about the convenience of getting the car to breath, and making a quiet car noisy isn't it? That being said, all I have to do is crack the pipes open a tiny bit, and that turbulence your concerned about is gone. Sounds amazing as well.
 
I have manual, bolt-on cap type cut-outs. I was seriously thinking about going the electric route to make it easier to open them up when at the track (I like to stay quiet on the street), but the last time I drove my car to TnT, I had to put the drag radials on and remove the street tires anyway, so when I had the car in the air, I popped under the chassis real quick and zapped off the 3 bolts that hold the cap in place with a cordless impact. Took all of 30 seconds. Took a little longer to put them back on at the end of the night...but not unbearable.

I like this new design. Wish him the best.

I run manuals also. The bolts are tack welded and I use wing nuts on two of the studs, takes a few minutes at the track to open or close. Mufflers are quiet on the street and car runs .2 quicker opened up.

did this on my p/u used diamond plate for kicks , did another type that swung the corks out around 270 degs on the fenderwell set , never needed gaskets on that setup .

An electric version is in the works. I forget how long he said it would be when they get them out but they are being tested now and they'll be the type that you can adjust how far open you want them, not just open or closed.

I noticed the part about it taking 4 minutes to open or close them and thought it seemed a little long too. I think if they had studs sticking out so all you had to do was slide one plate off and the other on it'd be quicker. JMHO

As for the comment about everybody wants electric cutouts, I have to disagree. Maybe a lot of people do but a lot of us cannot afford them (like me). And I don't need (or want) cutouts that I will have open a lot. Just what few times I make it to the track every year or maybe a car show or 2 a year.

But the point is this is for street/strip cars, not race cars. Did you watch any of his other videos? One shows a test done that verifies it's not just a little bit of turbulence happening, it's quite a lot

you are in the minority.. nothing wrong with that. just the way it is..
 
I'd never put cut-outs on a car again. I've used several sets. A good exhaust system's only disadvantage over open headers, is weight. Loud doesn't mean quick.

I agree with you, when I see a car with electric cutouts it's usually owned by the guy who opens em up to and from the car show, then sits in his lawn chair and talks about how his car runs 10's, or faster even though it's never been to a drag strip.

I think these cut outs actually look pretty decent.
