Wheel and tire question for 68 GTS

-
Hey Brian:
Your correct in the number of choices and sizes. It can be overwhelming. I'm looking to get some larger rims and tires to improve the handling and ride quality of the Dart while maintain an original or day 2 look. I'm not cutting anything, they took my sawzall license away a while ago.
There is a GTS registry for 1967-1969 Dodge Dart GTS's that came from the factory with the 340, 383 or 440 engine. Interesting site with some nice cars. It's www.gtsregistry67-69.com
If that doesn't work you can google it.
Rob
THANKS ALOT ROB, I assume you have a dart, what combination of tire are you running?

Sounds like a plan. What shows do you have down south Jersey? I've been to the one in Mount Holly. Haven't really been much further south than that. That's why I'm asking all the dumb questions so I can get this Dart road ready for the spring.

I'll have to look and see what shows are going on.

I picked up a set of 4 American Racing wheels in SBP from a guy called Ron's Rims on eBay. All four wheels are 15x7 and all four have 4 1/8" backspace. I have four matching 215/65R15 tires mounted on all four corners of my car.

There are a couple of pictures at the beginning of this thread. I'm running big 14 inch tires on skinny 5.5 inch rims. Not that the Dart handles like a Ferrari but the tires are a little squirrely on the rims. The tire sizes are in post # 7. They're BFG radial T/A's. They would be great on wider 14's but I'm going to 15's. Probably be for sale when I get some 15's.

Now they are some RWL's!!. That's a fine looking ride too. I'll have to check eBay. I've picked up a lot of stuff on there for the Dart already. Thanks for the tip, VA

I bartend at djais in belmar...
Nice. I've been there a few times grabbing a bite to at and getting out of the sun. Usually come in around 16th st or so. Pack a little cooler for cocktails on the beach. I'll stop in. Who should I yell for?

That's a nice list. Looks like a lot of things going on in S. Jersey, have some PA shows on there as well. You guys go way south. Most are an hour to hour and a half a way some are a little further. All I need is some high test and a sunny day and I'm there.

Another tire question. The Dart has no power steering. Would 215/65/15's make it a little easier by offering less resistance than 215/60/15's on the front. Or should I shut up, buy some tires and stop over thinking this?

i am in the same boat with mine, and I also am going for the white steelie look and poverty caps. Don't know what the previous owner was thinking...if you look at my set up-the front tires are taller than the rears. It has Wilwood manual discs up front I believe from a 73 (has LBP axles)
I am going with 215 65 or 215 70 fronts on a 15 x6.5 rim and 275 60 on 15x8 rear.

Almost looks like a larger rim size up front. And those are some tall tires. What a great looking Demon. I think the steelies and poverites will really set it off

so many tire size recommendations it get's to be too much. in the end, all said and done what tires front and rear with no modifications to car can I go with? I have brand new stock 14x7 cragar s/s wheels. I want it to look aggressive with the tire setup but don't want cut up my 68 dart gt. you also mentioned a registry, how would I go about finding that? thanks for all the suggestions, look forward to hearing from you guys, thanks brian
Scampman. I don't think I answered your question from your reply. The tire size on my Dart is 225/70/14 on the front and 245/60/14 on the rear. It has a nice aggressive stance/look and no mods were made. I'm going to 15 inch rims as the rims on there are the original 5 1/2 inch mopar rims. I have tires over 9.5 inches wide on 5.5 rims on the rear. They would be much better suited for 7 inch rims. Cragar SS's cant be beat. The tires are for sale if you're interested. BF Goodrich radial T/A's rwl. Only have about 2000 miles on them. Send me a pm

I see most guys seem to go with 60 series tires front and back , which are actually wider and lower profile then 70's, right? I'm in the process of putting 215/65x15 and 235/70x15 on my 69 Swinger using 15x6 front and 15x7 on the back - I have 14x5.5 all around right now. I ordered the 15" wheels from Coker because Wheel Vintiques confirmed that occassionally they have had problems with cap fit with their steelies.

I know 69 A-body have different clearances in the rear. I'm not sure about the 60 series being low profile? My rears are 15x8 wheel vintiques and no issues running oem dog dishes.

NO, 60 series is an aspect ratio. It doesn't necessarily mean wider or lower profile. It is an aspect number between the 2. (Ex 325/50R15)

My Cummins Ram 2500 truck has 35" tall tires under it. They are 60 series. ( LT315/60R20) They are anything but low profile!

My car has 50 series under it. They are 28" tall on 15's. Do these look low pro to you?

Buy your tires based on the SECTION width and TIRE HEIGHT that you require.

Nice car....Personally, I would keep the original 14 x 5.5 wheels.
Thats a collector car, and is worth more with its original wheels.
If you must experiment with different rims/tires, keep your oem wheels for another day.

Keep them, as in, on a shelf in the garage. I agree.

Then if he wants to sell someday he'll have them to include in the package.
