Hi, trying to locate 3/8" id round spacers. 3" long. The one used between mounting ears on alternator. Checked hardware stores, no luck.
Thanks
Steve

I went to a local steel company and bought the metal for fabricating my cross member and also some tube steel to strengthen the area the bolts went through. It was cheap and I just cut it to fit.

I wonder how much you will have wrapped up in a cut to length one from McMaster?

You should have started a want ad. You want them don't you? Do you have the bolt?

I have the bolt, but spacers have never been snug between mount ears,so I would like a bulk length for proper fit.
I couldn't maneuver Google to get suppliers or decent results.
Thanks all!
I'll get in touch with local machine shop and metal companies.

...or call some machine shops in the area. They always end up with racks of unused material.

The roll pin bushings that go in the ears keep things tight.

Do you have the bushing? It look

s like a big roll pin only short.

My new 70+ 2 field alt has one. My 2 yr old single field doesn't.
Like you mentioned you can get middle one snugged, there is still the short one that goes between back mount ear and cyl head.
I noticed when test fitting the 70+ alt and snugging down the alternator was not mounting as straight as I looked.
The new water pump I put on last year is partially to blame. Mount bosses were off from factory water pump.
Take a look at the 2nd pic, you can see where I had to shim/tweak the alt mount bracket. My single field is still hooked up in pics.
Thanks all.

Ok was able to find usable stuff at local Canadian Tire. OD isn't quite what I wanted but it'll work fine for now.
Here is where I am at now. All looks real close. The level is as close to a straight edge as I got lol.
Washer that was between alt ear and large bolt, was moved other side of alt ear. That brought alt out that little bit more.
Level laid against them looks "good".
Now to swap over all the electrical to 70+ stuff.
Thanks all.

IMHO you have a pulley issue not an alternator mounting bracket issue. What does your water pump pulley measure from the boss on the intake to the CL of the belt?

Hey mike, any thoughts on why the photo you posted has a alt bracket with a bend in it and a longer spacer between the head and the alt? Is it a 273 - 318 vs 340 - 360 thing. I see the water pump is different and maybe the timing cover is deeper???? Pardon my ignorance on this.

I don't know. It's just a photo I found on the net that showed the bushing in the ear.

---3/8" galvanized pipe---------cut to length. Can get up to 8" nipples at most any supply house.

The alignment issue stems from the new water pump I put on a couple years ago. I have pics somewhere for comparison.
My center line of fan belt measures 4 7/8" approx to intake.
The problem lies in the mount bosses for BOTH alternator adjustment arm and the power steering pump. Both of these being off throw alternator(and pulley obviously) same goes for ps pump.
I'll know better how it is once I get my 70+ alternator upgrade completed.
Thanks!

I think the diff between your measurement and mine can be attributed to intake differences or where you measured from vs me.
What do you get from the machined surface of the head to the CL of the belt?

I measure 5 inches CL fan belt to machined surface of the head.

Is your Alt bracket OE?. It seems to have a bend toward the block at the alt ears. I don't mean the part of it over the small spacer to the water pump but the rest of the brkt. Mine is flat the entire way and is OE. (might be optical illusion)

Your alt adjuster arm is on the wrong bolt it should go on the lowest bolt.

My spacer between water pump and bracket is about 1/4" yours seems to be 3/8 or less. (which I presume resulted in the slight bend in the alt bracket in that location)

My alt spacers measurements and order (using a tape measure)

Head
11/16 head to alt roll-pin
5/8 Alt roll-pin (in rear alt ear) (In your photos of later year alt it is brass colored)
2-1/8 alt roll-pin to alt bracket
3/16 Alt bracket
1/2 forward alt ear
3/16 spacer
Bolt

My water pump pulley straight edge to alt pulley is dead nuts on.

My Timing cover is 2-1/2 wide. (It is later year with drivers side timing mark but a loose 67 without drivers side timing mark is the same)
The alt mounting boss that does not require a spacer measures 7/8 from back of water pump
The PS boss on the water pump on the drivers side is flush with the back of the water pump and is 1-1/2 wide.

I can not for the life of me figure how yours is off by so much.

Thanks, 5" from head to center of belt. Yes there is a slight bend. Had to be done due to boss dimensions. I ground it down some as well to get everything to line up. I just didnt grind enough off.
It is OE brackets both alt and ps pump.
I'm good with how its mounted now.
Electrical is my issue now.....for now lol.
Once its fired up that will be the alignment test.
Cheers
Steve
