I was decoding my VIN on my 66 Barracuda and according to the VIN my car came with a 318. The fifth digit in the VIN is a D. I thought the biggest engine you could get was a 273. Anybody have any information on this? I don't have any information on the car as far as the original engine, the car has a 408 stroker in it now.

No 1st gen barracuda's came with a 318, which would have been the Poly at that time. The 273 was the first of the new "light" casting Chrysler engines during the 1964 model year, which are the LA engine. The LA318 was introduced for the 1967 model year, but didn't replace the 273 until the following model year, 1968
1966=Fender tag for the 273 2bbl(31), 273 commando (32)

Actually, you could still get the 273 though the '69 model year...they just had hydraulic lifters '68-'69 instead of solids ('64-'67).

No, no Barracuda with 318 left the factory in 65/66

True for Darts but NOT for 68-69 Barracudas.

As mentioned, 273 only for 66.

The fifth digit being a D is a 273. No 318's were ever used in 64-66 Barracuda's. 67 was the first year for a 318 LA

Still, the LA 318 wasn't manufactured or installed in any until '67 from everything I've seen and read.

My '66 came with the 273 2bbl originally but now has a mide '70s 318. Fender tag code 315.

A D code in 1966 was a poly 318 in the bigger body cars, not an A body.

Ok, here we go. In 66, if you got the 235 hp 273 4 bbl, it would be on the fender tag under the “ab” as “32”, but in the VIN, the 5th character only identified the engine size. In this case the “D” designates the 273, not which HP the 273 was, that was on the fender tag.
