Starting with a low compression fresh .60 overbore 340 out of a 73 Challenger. It's built to stock specifications by previous owner and I was wondering what would be some of the easiest/cheapest modifications to increase horsepower and update the engine a little bit.

Ideally I'd like forced induction via a junkyard supercharger someday, what're some steps to prepare for that? As for funds I'm a college student with a part time job and a penchant for dumpster diving.

Thanks in advance guys! You're a great community that I'm glad to be a part of.

Honestly if you're a student and work a part time job then wait until you're done with school and have the funding to do it right. If it runs good and is getting you by then leave it alone.

Secondly a 0.060 over 340 is a block I would not boost unless you have sonic checked the walls.

That's an entirely valid point I hadn't thought of. I'll stick to n/a and turbo my slant 6 instead for another car.

lo compression 340...be very careful with anything above a stock cam
maybe leave it alone and add a bit of gear or a little higher stall converter.

You need one of these.

For cheap and simple mods, I'd start with head work and headers. The heads I'd do myself. '73 heads are basically stock 360 heads. A lot to gain here, and headers would compliment the head work. Also, your stock cam would appreciate the head work and headers as well.

:rolleyes::BangHead: OMG! Really?!?! :BangHead:

LMAO!!!!

Can’t argue though!!!!

LOL. I should have taken bets on how long before this was posted. I could have retired to an exotic island on what I'd have made!
LMAO!!!!

Right! Tell me about it. It’s almost predictable.
Almost funny.....

actually the head work and headers work for me
also the stock 340 cam is long and lazy with little lift and not a good match except for emissions for a low compression 340
you can go to a shorter cam with more lift if you need to make a change- which I would not do till you are on your feet

That was the performance cam back in the day.

Camshaft and valve train technology wasn't up to snuff in those days. Duration was about all they had going at the time. No big lift, fast ramps, or good springs for stock or slightly modified engines. I remember when Comp Cams started in business. (Flashback) lol

Have @halifaxhops recurve a distributor for you and then play with the timing until you find the sweet spot...

Here's a car I helped my buddy Eddie build and the distributor from 'Hoppy' really woke it up....

Notice that the launch is from idle and not a brake torque.... Just stomp the gas from idle and hang on... :steering:
