Why spend the money to attend an event when you stare at your phone constantly?

Old and stupid.... That must be me. Having attended Drag Week 2019 and completely blown away by the event as a whole there were so many spectators staring into their phones from one end of the facility to the other and I just don't get it. Everyone I talked to who had a car in it were more than happy to talk about their car and probably the most personable group of racers you could ever be around.

I must have missed the bus lol... I can sit at home at watch a screen. But people need to put that phone away and go enjoy what's right in front of you and not what's through some bandwidth....

Crazy,
JW

I would guess it's stupidity. We have a mindless segment of society now. They're rude as hell talking and playing with their phones in restaurants being loud and obnoxious.....in fact, Kitty and I were out couple weeks ago at her favorite Mexican joint. Guy right behind us was talkin LOUD on his phone and had it on speaker. I asked him politely over the back of my booth to please go outside so we could eat in peace. He said and I quote "get fucked old man". Now, when I was younger, I was a tough customer. I'm still a big guy and when I get up, I can be imposing. Which is what I did. Turned around and looked him dead in the eye and said "follow me outside and say it again" and I proceeded to the door. He got up and stopped me and apologized and said "we ain't gotta do all that". He was a little pipsqueak, but I'm still glad he didn't take me up on it. I would have to hurt him right off the bat, because if I didn't he would have hurt me. I told him "fine, but there's no need to be rude and cuss your elders. maybe remember that next time". He actually said "yes sir" and went outside and finished his call. I'm getting to where I put up with that type thing less and less. It's probably gonna get me in trouble one day.

I am always astounded when I go to a bar or restaurant, see a young couple, and the dude is more interested in the phone than the girl.

John....you ain't old and stupid, it's just that you, Rob, myself, and many, many others our age grew up in the time that wasn't infected by modern electronics. We grew up talking to each other face to face, eye to eye, and extending a hand to shake with a new friend. I've always enjoyed going to things like Drag Week, The Mopar Nationals, etc, to see the cars with my own 2 eyes (now 4, lol) and even more so to meet the people that shared my interest in them. I cannot even begin to tell you the things that I learned about Mopars, and work techniques along the way. I've met tons of interesting people in this hobby, you and your Dad among them. While I do appreciate my cell phone, it means no more to me than my favorite ratchet! It's just a tool that I use only when needed or am forced to when it rings....lol. The best that we can do is to try and still enjoy life the way we all learned, and deal with the pricks like the one Rob encountered if/when we have to. :)

Look at the crowd at an NBA game on TV sometime. It blows my mind that someone would spend hundreds of dollars for a seat in the first few rows just to savor their time on social media.

Had a guy having a loud argument with his girlfriend standing in line at the Post Office. I'm big around but not very tall so I'm not imposing like Rob but have have been told I "have a look".I ask him nicely if he would take it outside and he ignored me. Next time I wasn't so polite. He did tell her he would call back but never did apologize and I just left well enough alone.

They are not there to watch the game. They are there to take photos and brag/show off to people on Facebook and Instagram while at the game. Cause if they didn’t show peeps pictures of them being there, then it didn’t happen. Those peeps need the responses from others not there saying ‘oh I wish I was there’ or ‘jealous’ or ‘I hate you’ or ‘awesome’.

They are not sports fans but Instagram/Facebook fans.

I admit I am on my phone waaayyy too much, but I DO NOT do bookface, Instagram, twitter or social whachamafrickincallit bullshit. The MEDIA Rams it down our throats CONSTANTLY. A few years ago Twitter was dying for whatever reason(dont care), somehow it survived and made a resurgance and now it is everywhere.
How do these entities get "valued"? Someone is paying somebody off obviously. Also fines....check the amount of fines bookface gets for stealing info from members. HUGE, in the amounts of billions. And it's only news for 1 day? And they keep chugging along.
And dont be naive people, this site is gathering info on everyone here as well.

When my sister in law would come over for dinner with her husband and two teenage daughters, my wife would confiscate their cell phones.. the teens no longer come to dinner, AND my sister in law gave my wife grief !! My wife told her "your next." Subject closed, they come over and we just ask how are the girls and leave it at that. Been a year so far..

When we go to their house there they are faces looking down into their phones. My wife told them it's annoying and rude having you do that, so please go into another room if you have to be on the phone. They love my wife and miss her, but they can't put those friggin phones down. Even their mother sees it now and complains but these 16 and 17 year old girls won't stop. I know I'd stop it.

I’ve been taking a break lately. Not texting as much. I do check the phone once in awhile for messages from customers

Before I retired from work I noticed how bad it had gotten, at lunch break nobody socialized with each other anymore they were all looking at phones, I was following a school bus yesterday and noticed every stop the kids would get off and be looking at phones as they walked from the bus, it amazed me how bad it has gotten. At the doctor's office now nobody socializes anymore they are all staring at phones. Then I notice I'm just as bad myself now, modern times, I miss the good old days!

Penguins game....
Kiss Cam............
I love it when they show a couple both on their cell phones and they get booed.

The drones with the phones. lol They walk down the street with their face to phone, only because they were replaced at work by a drone.

Well, I guess it ain't just me lol.....I myself can be an abuser of the pesty little devices on occasion but certainly only because I am bored or am catching up on something. In the last year I quit helping someone with a few car projects because they couldn't leave the phone alone. Also walked away from a nice paying gig because the group I was training couldn't leave their phones in the lunchbox....

In life we have options and when I can opt out of something based on someone and their love of a cellphone and I prefer to just not be involved well just read what's above lol...

Glad to see I am in the same room with quite a few on this topic..

It's all about control through convenience and addiction. Soon we will be like China and you will only be able to make monetary transactions with your phone. They will track every thing you buy and where you are at any moment of the day. Facial recognition, jaywalk and find a fine in your email and the money already withdrawn from your bank account, all digitally. That's how China does it. Then we will have the social score. Late payment? Posted something politically incorrect on social media? Your social score lowers and you cannot buy a first class plane ticket, or you may not be able to do this and that. You could stand in a DMV type line and pay money to increase your social score or do some community service. It's all coming here at some point. In fact I just read in Canada your insurance card will be on your phone. Get pulled over and hand the officer your phone. It's a one year phase out to do away with paper insurance cards. So no phone, NO drive! Now they have you, you must have the phone that they will use to control you. It's interesting to watch people with these phones and realize how easily people can be controlled. It's actually rather scary.

you are fool of good news. I will not comply. lol

It's not just phones. I really enjoy live music, be it local group or concert hall. Can't tell you how many times people around me are yapping away to the point where you can hardly hear the band. Some of these shows cost a decent buck. It's just plain rude.

Hence why I haven't gone to movie in a theater in 20 years. Round here, they all squawk on their damn phones-on speaker mind you-and get louder and louder till you say sumthin.

Jeez, are they really so attention-starved that you have to confront them?? I would talk to them outside of the theater AFTER the movie if they HAD to talk to a human face to face-just so I can enjoy my movie. :soapbox:

Well said. Amazon(I believe) has facial recognition that they have sold and is being used by US police departments.
Never heard about the paperless insurance thing.... and I'm in Canuckistan...interesting
Lord fn save us, but I highly doubt it lol

I dont even own a cell phone. I got a work phone that is totally remote monitored so I have to pay very close attention to what I view and who I text. I dont use it much outside work. My 4 year old plays on it more than I use it on the weekends. No instagram, facebook is a once a week check in, dont snapchat. All I do is FABO, Craigslist and shopgoodwill.com...too much good junk on that site!

My wife and I often go out to lunch after church. Most times we see a table with one parent and two teenage kids. We assume it is possibly a divorced parent with the kids. Most of the time, both kids are glued to / staring at their phones with the food on their plates untouched. I would NEVER allow that to happen under any circumstances!

We do the same thing at work and I'm just as guilty so I cant say much my break at work is my time to talk to my wife and kids via texting I dont talk on the phone to bother others, lol but I we are all on our phones we still talk and communicate but for the most part we play on our phones. But I will say this 10 years ago it was the same thing except instead of phones it was newspapers and magazines. So not much has changed except how we ignore each other hahaha
