1970 Dart Custom

-
Sweet little car. So you drove it back to IL. from ON.? That hardcore right there. Very cool.
I can't believe how many green 70-2 Dart where made. I've owned several myself and have a 70 4-dr parts car.

Albany, Oregon to Chicago, IL. I’m in Butte Montana. I’m thinking of Cannonballing it home tomorrow. She’s getting 19mpg at 70 mph through the mountains.

I may need some parts from you actually if you are parting one out.

Shoot me a list after you get home and go through it.
I've parted several 70-2 Darts.
Safe travels.

The rest of the trip was uneventful. It was flat and the speed limit was 70-80mph. The Dart kept up except for the biggest mountains.

Thanks again for the scenery pictures. Almost makes you want to keep driving...or just stop and soak it in.
Which steering wheel do you have? I have one from a 73 that's green if it fits.

The Chinesium radiator got replaced with a good original Mopar radiator after an hour of being home.

Your Dart reminds me of my old 74 Mercury Comet. It was also a 4 door but more of a avocado looking green with a white top, straight six. Good times with it. I think cylinder 4 or 5 was starting to go but it would still get up and go and purr.

I took the rear seat out to pull the ugly custom seat cover off and I found a perfect build sheet. There is another one under the front seat. I also started to remove the cover on the front seat. What you see in the pictures is the beautiful original upholstery that was covered up.

I already did the radiator and thermostat, but I will be installing a set of KYB shocks, a replacement steering gear, wiper blades, wiper motor, starter, and a bunch of original parts I have around the garage.

original manual steering on the car? I purchased a 73 Dart with similar equipment as yours. It was green on green with no vinyl roof. As I am leaving, the original owner tells me that the car was white but she told the dealer she would only purchase the car is if it was green exterior. Unfortunately, the extra coat of paint did nothing to save it from the Illinois rust moths. If you want a picture of the steering wheel I have, give me a shout.

This one is a painted top. I will not buy a vinyl top car unless it has other cool features.

I appreciate the offer but a steering wheel is low on the list of priorities. I am looking to ceramic coat the car and then do the under side with fluid film or woolwax.

When you are ready bring one of your Darts down to beautiful downtown Darien and I'll give it to you.

I pulled the carburetor off to rebuild it and I saw that someone has already been in here. Unfortunately they messed up a lot of stuff.

The jet was two-steps too lean, the float spring was missing, the float bowl baffle is missing and the curb idle speed adjustment screw is missing.

I need to get a baffle and a curb idle speed adjustment screw. I’m not happy that these parts are missing.

I feel your pain.
I don't know WTH it is with people when they rebuild a carb and either modify or lose some pieces and call it good.
Then they wonder why the car doesn't run properly and blame it on the carb manufacturer.
Example:
Carter or Holley carbs are junk.........
They worked just fine when new, so what's the problem now?
Never mind that the gas is 10 years old, a plugged fuel filter, the car has 2 fouled plugs with the wrong gap, and the timing is severely retarded, and the distributor cap is cracked.
''Oh I had to drill the jets and lower the float level to make it work''.
(and, that's after they lost some of the parts or installed them wrong of course)

Yes, that's a pet peeve of mine............

It seems to me that whoever was in there has been at this a while trying to chase an issue. It is supposed to be a 1920-4354, but it is a 1920-4656 which is a 1971 carburetor.

I’m surprised the car even ran with the curb idle speed adjustment screw missing, let alone made it 2200 miles from Oregon to Illinois. Either way, it’s what I have until I can get a 4354 carburetor with the right date-code.

I took the car to my friend to diagnose the misfire. It actually turns out the head gasket has blown between cylinders 5 & 6.

Ouch sorry to hear that.
No big deal. I already had a head gasket, intake/exhaust gasket and valve cover gasket lying around. My friend said he checked compression and 5 and 6 would bleed into each other. He pulled the head and there was no damage, so the new gaskets went on and it runs beautifully.

So the car is back. It runs very smooth, engine wise. Unfortunately the carburetor is not the best. I am still dealing with a bog/dead spot. It has been rebuilt and it has a #56 jet, and it works well except for if you push on the accelerator too quickly it will sputter and even stall sometimes. It will drive, but it is handicapped.
