Bore and hone your own block?
Deck your own block?
Line home your own block?

All stuff you don’t do, that you can’t do without the machines and tools, so the guy who did the 318 didn’t do anything trick.

I used to make the rod throws as light as I could, so I could reduce the OD of the counterweight as much as I could. Then I woke up, reduced the OD of the counterweight and added one more stick of Mallory, rather than screw around and lighten up the rod pins. The better money was spent reducing the OF of the counterweights.

So again, the engine in the magazine article wasn’t trick. It would be very easy to put that over 500 HP, and you maybe could do it with the cam they picked.

A decent set of edlebrock heads or some Chinese heads would easily put power what they used in that build.

It’s not trick by any stretch of the imagination.

I tried to say this about 45 post ago but there's no rhyme or reason or direction for this entire thread... What are we arguing about again? whether you were one of the nose picking watchers or racing while people were picking their nose and watching?....
Personally I've never ever been to the drag strip without my car and a tech card...
So I believe that keeps me out of the nose picking watcher category....

No arguing, just saying dyno numbers don't always tell the truth. How many times have you seen a guy post big dyno numbers and the car never comes close to backing the numbers up? There was an engine builder on this site that was always posting small blocks that made stupid power and yet none of them backed it up.

What I'm calling bull **** on is all the blowing you do.

I’d use the HR engine masters recipe but swap to some W2s that flow at least 280cfm. Use an Indy 360-3 intake, a 1050 HP, solid roller cam around .650 -.670 [email protected]. 1.875” TTIs, and bump compression up to 11.5 on 93. I think you could even street it some if you pulled a little timing.
I think that may peak 500hp around 7k rpm.

Every builder was building 600 HP Chevy 350's in the 70's, must be at least 900 now. lol at 6500 rpm .NA :rolleyes:

That's it, I'm claiming it. My 318 in my '74 Duster is at 480 hp, only needing headers to hit 500. *see car at the bottom of my page.

The article on the 477hp 318 states the heads were ex-SS heads.

If they were competitive SS heads, I could build a whole 500hp 408 for what those heads would cost.

You take the top end and cam off a 500hp 408, and put them on a 318 of the same CR....... you’re not going to end up with 500hp.

The 500hp 408 can be built by ordering pretty much the entire motor from the Summit catalog.
Deck/bore/hone the block, prep some heads, blend the bowls, an off the shelf cam from some catalog, bolt it together.....10.5:1, pump gas.......500hp.

Article also states if someone wanted to build similar he’d use ported EQs and it’s 13 years old probably now they would say trick flow.

Funny how 340/360/408 500 hp no problem but go 318 and all a sudden it’s super hard, there’s a builder on here that built a 450 hp 273 with ported EQs, I posted a video of 500 + hp 302 Ford and Chevy peaking at 7000-7300 rpm.
 
Some on this thread feel the air flow is the only thing that matters in making power.
If that’s the case, then a 318 should be able to do it with bowl blended J heads.
My 383 made 504hp on the dyno with unported 906’s that flowed 235cfm.

The Wallace calculator seems to agree it was 500hp.

13:1, roller cam, CNC ported Canfield heads.
It would pull 8000 like nothing.

Yet, with lesser flowing heads, the same CR and no roller cam...... I was able to get a 451 to make over 100hp more.

But I believe it would be in the 7000 or so rpm range. Going to have to spin it.
 
Air flow is everything....... like the 220cfm heads(and the .420 net lift at the valve cam) on the motor powering this car......

Oh yeh, stock iron intake and a Q-Jet too.

Then it should be a snap whiz to produce a low revving 500 HP 318.

Nor do I....... it’s just not going to be something you can throw together like you could with a 408 that had several of the components being far from optimized, and still end up making the 500hp.
 
This is a cast crank, flat top piston 416(12:1) with an easy on parts flat tappet cam and bowl ported RPM heads.
Knock the CR down to a pump gas friendly 10.5:1, take some duration out of the cam, but crank up the ramp speed a bit...... still would be very solidly over 500hp.

Don't even know who your arguing with no one on here thinks you don't need to spin a 318 to make 500 hp, people just weren't agreeing with your 8000 rpm assessment. The 477 hp 318 need 6500 rpm the 520 hp 302 needed 7000 rpm.

Do you know how many times I’ve been told my flow bench and dyno numbers are lies because the car doesn’t run what it should? Many, many times.

So you go to the track and watch the junk **** make a pass. The converter is wrong, not nearly enough gear, worn out tires, the car has never been on a scale, let alone corner scales, shocks I wouldn’t use on station wagon, front end tied down so the driver can “cut a light”, wheelie bars too low, ladder bars (if you can’t hook with a cal Trac type of bar you need a 4 link, of course the morons don’t want to learn a 4 link so the ignorance inertia goes forward), wheelie bars too high, IC set by the ladder bars or on a 4 link set by some magic percentage of the wheel base, can’t read a plug or use a timing light...

It goes on and on and on. So the time slips are NOT evident of much anything except can the tuner tune. Most times, the answer is no. So the dyno numbers aren’t wrong, it’s the junk car and/or ignorant tuner. But they dyno numbers take the fall for stupid.

As for the rest of your whittle little post, you didn’t question ****. How can you? I haven’t posted ANY numbers yet, but your mouth is on full blast. You are running your sewer about something that hasn’t even happened yet.

And you try and claim the high road. You can critique the dyno numbers AFTER they are posted not before. Do you see how idiotic you are being?

Grow up and act like a 59 year old man who actually has been to a track once or twice.
