I am not saying that something isn't wrong, but it's not abnormal to have a little something in the pan and oil filter, cut the filter open and see what's there. It's easy to scuff cam bearings when installing the cam. Same for piston install and first run.
Did you prime the oil system before start up?
It is easier to work on the engine when it's out, but verify if something is really wrong first.
I fully agree with our friend from down under.Might be poor cleaning & residue left in the engine. Not sure I would be stripping it at this stage. Maybe install a new filter, put some miles on it, remove filter & check again. If residue is less or none, run it.
Had to pull the pan on my new engine because the header has clearance issues. Saw a bunch of junk in the pan. Definite metallic content. This blows. View attachment 1715803223
I pulled my 408 Six Pack after 4 mins of running due to a bad rear main seal. I understand what your going through

Comp Cams rockers. What it looked like before I started removing it.Yes it sucks big style but what can you do but roll up the sleeves and fix the problem. By the way your engine looks sweet. I like the painted heads. What kind of rocker arms are you running?
That's killer....Comp Cams rockers. What it looked like before I started removing it.

That aint that bad, I have seen worse.Had to pull the pan on my new engine because the header has clearance issues. Saw a bunch of junk in the pan. Definite metallic content. This blows. View attachment 1715803223
I did pull a main cap. It was grooved and had evidence of contamination. Plus the chrome looking flakes had me spooked. There was a bunch of gritty crap and metal shavings in the pan. Pure piece of mind I need to look at it and make sure. Worst case I strip it doiand it looks alright. New set of bearings and gaskets and off we go. Just a few weekends no biggie.think I woulda checked the bearing before pulling , maybe not needed -----?
70+ cold, 60+ hot. I think the clearances might be too tight. That aint that bad, I have seen worse.
What was the oil pressure during breakin ?
