As many of you know I tried to get my duster out for the last test n tune last year to try out my new 408 last year. My son Matt was going to be driving and when he took it to warm up around the track we had no second gear. I tried everything possible at the track and actually had 2nd gear (powerglide) on the jackstands but it soon quit again. Well I only had 3 passes on this transmission since I built it and it ran fine except the converter I threw in it was only 4600 stall instead of my usually 5760 so it was only running 6.30. Several of my friends suggested the sealing rings were leaking and suggested nylon rings on the pump and input shaft instead of cast iron rings. Well I pull the pump today to check it out and rebuild it and the top sealing ring on the pump was siezed and the second one was tight. This was with a brand new steel drum. There’s one heck of a burr too. Time to investigate and do some research.

Sorry, that's the only "help" I can provide regarding Powerglides.

Bushing in the drum too loose? that looks terrible.

Man I hate when I do something stupid. I recently just started buying and using after market drums and I built an 8 clutch drum for my heads up car and a 6 clutch drum for my black duster. Well John forgot to install the bushing in the drum. And if that’s not bad enough I now I have to pull the transmission out of my heads up car to double check that drum. Ohhhh well at least I have it figured out.

So, are you saying the missing bushing allowed the drum to move around causing the damage to the pump and sealing rings?
At least you finding something. Would be worrisome to see those sealing rings damaged and not know why it happened.

Yep that’s what happened. It cost me 100.00 drum and I haven’t decided it I’m going to pull the pump out of my last stock powerglide or buy a statter and change it out. Clutches I haven’t made up my mind yet. I’ll clean up a nice working area and inspect them. I’ll get to try out my new bushing installation and removal kit.

I vote for a new stator, if the replacements are good.
I am just glad you found there was an issue last year instead of at the first race you go to this year.

Glad u found it and can fix it relatively easy and cheaply. Kim

Parts are going to be rolling in. I’m borrowing the pump out of my 1.98 gearset powerglide for now as it has five years on it and needs rebuilt anyway. I paid 20.00 extra for Wednesday delivery from Nevada Summit for the drum and the Stator is coming from ATI so I will fix the other pump later.

Good deal, John. Kim

Well she’s going back together. Reverse clutch clearance is set and the drum is supposed to be flying in and delivered tomorrow. I’m going to update it to a roller rear cover that I bought for my sons transmission and using the pump out of my 1.98 gearset powerglide that is next up for rebuild. This pump was machined for a Torrington roller bear.

You don't stupid, fact !

Well I’ve been morning the death of Propane and I got the call this morning that his ashes are ready for pickup so that’s tomorrow morning. Today the old fat guy got out of his chair and got this powerglide installed in my black duster. I still have plenty to finish up but at least it’s in and bolted up. That’s the hard part by myself. The new stands worked so much better than my quick-lift letting me climb in and out easier to see which way the transmission had to go. Plans were to mount new front tires if everything seemed good and hit keystones Friday test n tune and if all was well race Saturday. But because they were rained out 4 times straight they canceled Friday and made Saturday test n tune. So I can slow down a little and aim for Saturday. I have new slicks too but that takes awhile with sealing them up with Dawn soap, taking them to get mounted, and then I bubble balance them here. Man I hope I have this transmission right now.
