Identify coating on my 273 rocker arms

This isn’t a paint and I doubt a stain. Is this some sort of coating? It’s not on the inside machine surface. What coating is this? Was this done at the factory?

That would be my guess...

Or dark chocolate...

I would not guess DLC as I am looking at it?
Dark "Cacao" Chocolate is a possibility.

Looks like it wiped off the ball.

Black gloss paint. Rattle can. True value brand. Possibly 2005-2008.
I also detect a hint of rosemary. I may be wrong on that one.

I don’t know the history on this build. This is what I found on the motor when I opened it.

Does the coating wipe off now? If not, what about if you apply acetone on a rag?
