440 Source Balance Job

And back to an earlier question in a post .

I think the part about the oil is not so much what’s clinging to the crank,,,but rather the weight of the oil flowing with in the crank passages.
On the balancer,,,the passages are empty,,,but not when in use .
That is just used as a rough approximation ( SWAG method ),of what it would weigh .

how do you account for the oil clinging to the crank and rods?
A couple shops I've used add a couple grams to the rotating weight portion of the bobweight. Seems like everyone has their own way of doing it though.

I guess it just shows that for a street car, a few grams here or there won't make or break a build. I mean, how close was the balance on these engines from the factory?

That’s just it. Back in the 70’s IIRC (probably the early 70’s if not the 60’s) Chrysler was doing extensive testing on the G2 Hemi.

IIRC, a Hemi running at 8k could hold 8 quarts (EIGHT QUARTS) of oil around the crank. And it acted like taffy and would whip and slam around and then ball up and bounce back into the oil in the pan and that in turn would splash more oil on the crank.

All skirted blocks are tremendously bad about retaining oil. Far worse than an unskirted block. They also are less affected by windage trays and crank scrapers.

Oil control on skirted blocks is a nightmare.

Anyone claiming to add weight to account for oil on the crank is full of ****. It is what it is.

A crank that is 20 grams off on both ends will still be 20 grams off PLUS whatever oil is hanging off of it.

A crank that is 5 grams off on both ends will still be 5 grams off PLUS whatever the oil is hanging off of it.

That’s why I have MY standards. If my name goes on it, it has to meet that standard. It may be a low standard for some and a high standard for others.

That’s why I always ask people to define ambiguous terms like best. I need to know how they define BEST for what THEY want.

Some people think it’s accusatory but in reality best needs to be defined by the end user because my best may be different than his.
