69 Barracuda 408 Blue Print

Just rebuilt my 69 Barracuda a year ago. Put a 408 Blue print motor in it and blew the trans. all forward no reverse. Looking to buy a new 904 (what I had in it, StreetFighter). Thought about about a 727 but i'm still not sure, Should I change the stall on the Torque Converter? Also I have a 7 1/4 rear. Thinking of going to a 8 3/4. Just looking for ideas and advice. Thanks

The streetfighter should be fine with about a 2800 stall converter IMO. The 7 1/4 has to go with that combo, it won't last long. A 3.55 gear in an 8 3/4 should be good.

How did you blow the transmission? I thought the streetfighters were decent and would hold up.

*edit* N/M I see it was a stock 904.

In my post I worded it wrong. I have a stock 904. was looking at a Street Fighter 904 through Classic Industries. As I said, I thought about about putting a 727 in. Not sure if I wanna change the drive shaft and possibly the shifter linkage.

Hi Mike,
Nothing wrong with running a 904 trans if it's properly built. I suspect the stock trans had not been rebuilt since going in the car 56-58 years ago.
Streetfighter is good. A reputable local trans shop might be found by calling a local machine shop and asking for a rec. Or you can check with your buddies. A local shop may give you a customized build.

Just rebuild your 904 with quality parts and get a quality torque converter. Get an 8.75 put your fav gears in it with suregrip and let it rip.
 
Just curious, did the 904 case crack or anything? These trans are actually really easy to rebuild by yourself... it's just paying attention to details, once you do it once it's cake...

Yeah, I was pretty surprised as well and mine was a slightly more complicated A999, but after the rebuild I just converted mine to non-lockup.

Nice, didn't know you can do that... i assume it's mainly the input shaft and TC? maybe pump? any changes to the valve body to convert?

Yup, shaft, pump and I just bought Turbo Action's Stage 2 'Cheetah' Valve body, but you could also make modifications to the OE valve body to disable the Lock-up function. I just opted for the easier but slightly stronger route, plus pre-inflation the Cheetah VB was only like $260.

yeah that's not bad..... i would love to switch to a OD trans but i can't give up the cable shift.

Yeah I thought about getting an OD trans like the A500, but I also like my cable shift A999, plus the money I invested into the A999.
And also the fact that putting in the A500/518 was going to require a bit of tunnel surgery.
Mine came out of a 1988 Dodge Diplomat which was a retired police cruiser. The 2.74 1st and 1.54 2nd gears is a plus as well.
So I'm going the Gearvendors route soon. (been saving up the past couple of years)

ahh sorry... i thought the 999 was a OD.. that's the 514 or whatever... silly brain :)
 
When you swap out the 7-1/4 to a 8-3/4 you will need a different driveshaft.

A 904 to a 8-3/4 is something like 48-3:4” ujoint to ujoint.

A 727 to 8-3/4 is something like 44-1/2”

You will need to verify exact measurements.

I have not measured my 904 to 7-1/4 drive shaft yet to see what it is.

I would also tell you to consider adding frame connectors to your car, you’ve got a lot of horse power now with that 408 motor.
 
If you can buy a complete 8-3/4 drum to drum you will be ahead of the game.

I bought a B-body 8-3/4 drum to drum and the had a chassis shop cut it down to A-body specs which are 52-5/8” end to end for the housing and spring perches are 44” center hole to center hole. That cost with new spring perches and labor was $355. Then about $200 for a 489 3:23 pumpkin.

I would tell you to look at the Dr Diff website to see what he offers.

Sounds like case/housing is not damaged, so your 904 can be rebuilt.
Maybe get a quote from a local shop to compare to the Streetfighter price. Local shop = local help if you have a problem. And no shipping costs.
