wtf why not hemi....
Same lame reasoning Indy cars can only run Honda or Chebby engines now. To "level the playing field". Pfff... I want to see people and teams that excel- in innovation, engineering/design, construction, execution, and ability. Not mandated designs that reduce the competition to a simple clash of personalities.
If I want a level playing field I'll watch billiards.

I think a 305 coming back from 2 laps down to finish 7th qualifies as "running with the big motors" and proves the combination could be competitive, at least on the superspeedways. The reason this combination did not continue is because the aero bodies would "age out" after 1971/2 (three year old bodies were the max at the time, and the '69-'70 aero cars were already at the end of their lifespan) and wasn't really worth the costs associated with continued development of the combination. Most (Mopar) teams had already made the transition to the Charger and Roadrunner, which could still run the Hemi engine that was a proven combination that had already had substantial development done to it, and would be able to run the combination for another three seasons.
you can bet it wasnt 305 elephant motor

He didn't have to spin people out , or drive dirty like some of the well known drivers did .
Remember nascar killed the hemi because it was winning so many races , just like the nhra put 600 pounds on the hemi because bill jenkins pissed and moaned about not being able to beat them very often .
FACT < CHECK IT OUT !
wally parks apologized to Ronnie Sox yrs. later for it too >FACT..

that was well after they killed the hemi !
Wrong again. It was in the 1971 Daytona 500, the first race of the season. The Hemi wasn't banned, it (and the 427 SOHC) were just banned from aero cars. Most teams reverted to non-aero standard B bodies and continued running the Hemi. As a matter of fact, Petty won the championship that year with his Hemi Roadrunner.

He repeated in '72 (but switched to a Dodge Charger mid-season)

And won the 1973 Daytona 500 (but lost the Championship to Benny Parsons)

All this was after the little 305 had proven it's mettle in the 1971 Daytona race.

Daytona was a sellout. But only because thay removed the backstrech stands some years ago. I used to stop what I was doing to watch a race, Now I don't even know what day or time a race is on. They keep moveing The day, time, station. Too hard to keep track of. Also no inovation on the cars, any more. Nascar might just as well build all the cars. Have them at the track (like the IROC series), and the teams draw numbers to see which car they get.

no argument , sure wasn't a 305...

No need for the 305 at that point since the aero cars had aged out after '71 and teams had moved on.
After the restrictor plate-laden Hemi phased out in '75, it was 355s until the end (this time) for Mopar.
