New to Big Blocks

-
That block was re-used on BB cudas '67-69. Those front mounts are used as well as the front mount ear. The rear ear is cut off moving the new mount location farther forward clearing the steering box. In '68/'69 the left exhaust manifold was changed allowing room for PS. So for 1967 BB, no PS available, for late '68 and '69 two manifolds available allowing a PS option. Schumacher should have original mounts available. That PS pump looks correct for a BB.

THe two letters cast on the side of the blocks stopped in mid 60's. 1967 and up 440's don't have it. 426 Hemi never had it. And it looks like this 67 383 still had it.

Oil pump question...

If the dist is out can the oil pump be spun to build pressure and circulate oil / diesel through the engine, rotating the crank to get all the passages.

I'm probably not going to do this, I did it on a Ford 460 but it was a running engine.

yes, but you need to pull the oil pump driveshaft as the gear is part of it and use a priming tool/shaft which has no gear.
neil.
yes the below are 383 but the idea's the same....
driveshaft
priming tool

I thought the 400 had the largest bore of all the big blocks, from the factory. And same stroke as the 383.

close but no cigar, lol. a 400 is a B block and the bore on those is 4.342" which is bigger than any RB too.
neil.
We are talking 1950's and 1960's engines. A 400 doesn't take part in the large cast in letters on the side of the block, so I'll raise your "no ciggar". LOL

doh! :BangHead:
now if you'd mentioned that before rather than saying ''The 4.25 bore of a 383 is the largest bore for a B block'' :poke:

So
If you are wanting to build a 67 GTS “tribute” “clone” whatever. You will need both the 67 K frame as well as the exhaust manifolds.
I have both I’m willing to trade for 68-69 stuff. The 67 k frame has the single ear idler arm. The mounts on the 67 make it so you cannot have original PS on a 67.

Motor mounts for 67-69 383 A body all the same. Used the two bosses on the front of the block and the front mount ear. For 383 cars the rear ears weren’t all shaved. Maybe replacement block??
As for 69 M code the driver side mount used the same ear on the block but had bosses in the oil pump mount area.

No. The drive gear on a small block Ford is pinned to the distributor, not the drive shaft
My memory is not what it once wasn't.

I just recalled pulling the dist and using a hex shaft to spin the oil pump. So that would Mean the gear came out with the dist. Duuuuuh!

New question...

The location of the drivers side engine mount on the k member for a Big Block is different than that for a small block correct?

Anyone make kits to modify a V8 k member?

I know conversion mounts are available and the small V8 k member gets a notch on the driver's side mount. But I would rather use OEM style parts.

Left side mount is further outboard. It also uses a specific rubber biscuit. You can buy the 440 style left mount from Schumacher for the original K frame. Occasionally the rubber shows up.

But the pass side mount is in the same location on SB and BB, correct?

A buddy has a BB k frame so I'm thinking of making a jig to locate the drivers side based on the pass side and the k member bolt locations.

Man, no sweat! I forget why I walk in the next room for on a regular basis. The only reason I remembered that is because I have a Ford engine now and it's still fresh. lol

TransDapt makes a kit that look OEM and is reasonable.

Uh oh. That's for A body. I don't know if they make one for B body.

No passenger side is also quite different. The passenger side mount is the B and E body right side mount. It sits further back than small block.
If I remember right the left mount is a slightly modified early C body mount.
If your welding skills are up you can cut the mounts off of a six k frame and fabricate the mounts you need. No one has mentioned “elephant ears” either so I’ll point that out as well. Elephant ears mount to the front of the block and bolt to the frame. It completely eliminates the mount issue and provides more space.
