I just read the article at Road and Track. It is a modified vehicle with straight pipe exhaust and no mufflers.
NASCAR racers are modified and have straight pipes and no mufflers. They can go 200 mph, too. Never seen one of them melt. . . .

Aren't those side exit exhaust? And above the exhaust is sheet metal, I think. This one has all the exhaust heat right there in a low pressure dead zone, and the rear fascia is plastic if I am not mistaken.
