Is this a good deal?

I haven't done one since 1998, it was $75 back then lol. Just wondering what's normal these days.

904 non lockup,
Hughes: $360
Superior in Oregon: $182

Edit: changed title to reflect actual costs!

There can only be two reasons when the cost disparity is that great.

1. The expense company is screwing its customers.

2. The cheap company is cutting corners and/or doesn’t have the same equipment.

An example of this is a cylinder hone. Some hones are around the 200k mark and they go down from there.

That is an example of the newest, most expensive machine doing things a lesser machine can never do.

Price shopping is a tricky proposition.

How....fancy?
Their XTM model. Nothing crazy, maybe $650 instead of 500.

Kind of odd, they suggested the XTM initially but later said it's too tight for my application, that I should have a 2300 stall vs the 2000 that was in there.

Probably could have sold me a bolt together billet if they had tried.

Arent those towing numbers?? And towing converters? I guess im not understanding the process. I dont think Ive heard much of the need to rebuild/refresh low stall converters, and if this is for your blown Cuda, i have to assume you cant get anything like traction with that setup?? Cool car, btw.

Or a diesel converter, I'm not sure. I told them I didn't want a higher stall and just an inspection/refresh, but the case got blown apart when welding it back together.
It gets traction with the new torsen diff but I also haven't hit it yet due to weird noises. Feels like it's going to snap my neck off with 3.91's.
Thanks for the kind words

Just got the converter back. A couple passes with a Q-tip inside the snout at the very bottom, it ain't grease, metal bits in that black stuff, along with rust inside the drain plug hole.. Feel like I got hosed right now.

Did Hugues do that? Regardless I’d send it back and make them pay the freight. I doubt they will but that’s horrible.

Yes, I'm pretty annoyed. There's other signs of rough handling like dings and grinder marks inside the drain. They packed it with wet paint so it stuck to the cardboard box. You should see the case welds, I would never let anyone pay for that. $517

It looks like they didn't clean anything inside

That sucks.

That's very unfortunate. I have 2 hughes converters in vehicles now and they have been great for the money. However, I have an FTI in my duster and it's an excellent converter. That 517 is over half the amount of a new FTI

FTI says hand TIG welded, that's what I'm talking about. I don't think drinking on the job would even excuse the stuff I'm finding on this converter.

I've used PTC, Hughes, TCI, among others and the FTI is the highest quality TC I've bought. I know others that use them, and some are running 5's in the 1/8

I genuinely appreciate that, thank you. I'm just looking for something that isn't quite this embarrassing.

And a full thank you to everyone that's input so far, it's nice to hear I'm not being fussy.

Remembered I have a borescope

That is very unfortunate, i personally have never heard anything good about that company.

So you're wanting a stock converter then.

If 2000 is stock then yeah. I'd settle for 2300-2500
Precision Torque Converters in New Hampton Iowa, is a suggestion. I've bought one and had them reconfigure a 10" 727 unit that needed a little more stall. Both were low 400's, shipped to my door.
