Wow Mark, Glad Josh is OK. I was actually concerned about that. I too built a car with my son for high school. I know he used to street race it. Luckily he never crashed it

Damn! Well best thing is he's fine and will NEVER forget that. We've all done it, just not always the same result. I did same thing in my 1st car Duster. Going left at a set of lights downtown...*** end out and folded pass side 1/4 panel in by folding over a street sign lol. Middle of the day and busy intersection lol. Bent sign back best we could and hightailed it in garage at home lol.

Sorry to see all the damage to car but glad he is ok except for pride. I have hit mine too hard and spun it around more that once but never went to that extreme. I am sure if had the engine i have now in it I made not be here, Joe
 
A hard lesson indeed, but thankfully Josh is able to talk about it, plus perhaps his siblings will take note.
There are plenty of other cars out there, and now he's got a good drivetrain to work with.

I destroyed my share of cars in my youth, probably one other person's share too, but I was fortunate enough that I never experienced a wreck like that. My ex wife's son was all excited to get her 75 Dart Swinger when he got his license, had a mountain of plans and ideas for the car. About 6 weeks after he was given the keys, I got a phone call at 3 AM when he hit a utility pole a few blocks from home. Dead centered and pushed the engine back about 8 inches. His mother kept asking me why I wouldn't fix it, I left it sitting in the front yard for a month for all the neighbors to see, then I made him help me strip it before I dragged it to the scrap yard.

I wonder if he was wearing seat belts. My '71 Demon has the lap belt and the shoulder belt; not sure if the shoulder belt was an extra cost option back then.

Wow that is wild, the roof skin separated at the factory quarter sail area and the windshield pillar post.

Figured those areas are double strong being they overlap.

Must have been a shitty job of spot welding on the assembly line that day it was built.

Earlier A-bodies had lead in the seams making them even stronger.

Really glad hes ok too. I made my share when younger as well, almost died rolling my dads '69 Mercy Cyclone 390HP going down a hill on a grid(gravel) road when I was 15. Too much power in that car for a fairly new driver, was thrown out of the car and still cant believe Im alive today.
My dad used to say that a youngster shouldnt have anything too nice, or too powerful for their first car, and I fully agree with that.
But man, still glad hes ok.

We replaced the roof skin when we built the car. 3M panel bond. If you look close enough you can also see where the qtr patch panel broke free of the panel bond..... Thats enough to convince me to go back to welding when I build 68 and Josh builds again.

Maybe the fact that the energy was dissipating through the body coming apart saved him. Maybe all panels should be bonded instead of welded. Like an indy car when it crashes, it’s supposed to shed as many parts as possible and dissipate as much energy as possible while keeping the driver compartment in tact.
 
I'm glad to hear he's okay.
And also, I'm glad to hear that he manned up and said it was his fault, that would be very important to me.
The next car that you and him build with the parts off of this car should be good, now that he learned his lesson and respect the power that these cars have.
And I would make him pay every penny it takes to get another car to fix up.
Hopefully he has learned a hard lesson here...

I almost feel like the pic should be a sticky in the body section or something with all the attention ( hype ) panel bond has gotten in the past few years.
 
Probably invest in defensive driving lessons, my dad raced cars my whole life and he knew i would drive like a dick, so first thing he did when i got my license was an advanced driving course. Never bent a car other than two small fender benders and always owned seriously modified cars as my daily drivers
 
I'm glad the kiddo is okay, too bad about the car. Sometimes we all have to learn things the hard way. LOL
