Hello everyone. My name is Bill and I have had a soft spot in my heart for years for the scamps and darts. Short back story how I ended up here. So as a 15 year old kid I found a 1972 Plymouth scamp on eBay way back in 1997 down in Harrisburg Pa and I won the auction for $278 dollars. We brought it home and got it running and I loved that car. Well being a broke kid I didn't have the funds to v8 like I dreamed of. It ended up getting pretty rough and it ultimately went to the scrap yard. I still remember watching the loader pierce the door and the glass breaking and just picking it up. It crushed me and I always wanted another one some day.

Then fast forward many years and I ended up falling in love with the Mazda Miata platform and built many of them from mild to wild and even a lifted off-road version. I got married and had 2 kids and though it was great platform I had to come to reality that it wasn't going to work with 4 of us. So again I had 12 years into one show car and more money then care to admit invested I decided to switch gears and find something family oriented.

I went round and round as I am JDM guy but nothing fit the bill. Fits 4 people, can get 500ish plus horsepower but be fun and different. I toyed with mustang gt or challenger scat packs but they aren't unique or different. Don't get me wrong great performance even in stock form but not what I wanted for me. Then it hit me. Why not get a another A body. Scamp or Dart doesn't matter but what can we do for a powerplant. I thought about it and thought about. Ls swap? Go with a magnum and turbo it but I kept coming back to one engine. I know the purists won't like this and I understand this has been done l. Just know when I thought of this I had no previous knowledge so I don't want anyone thinking I'm just copying someone's build.

It had to be a JDM engine and a straight 6 just because it belongs in the engine bay like a good ole slant 6. Only one 3.0 liter I knew of that could make 500hp with little engine work. The Toyota 2JZ. Yes the very engine found in many Lexus and Toyota's. I didn't know a lot about them but man the past 6 months I have learned a lot and made a plan to find one.

I did find a 1972 Dart swinger on marketplace about 30 mins from my home. It was a 1 owner and garage stored since there grandmother passed away in 1995. The car had 15k original miles. Has some dents and lower quarter rust and rot but all fixable and the car as a whole was a true survivor. You don't find them like this anymore and I was so excited to find this and be able to bring it home with my 6 year old son.

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to shed some backstory so people understand the build before just not know the passion I have had for these 2 types of cars and make them one and be mine and something that fits me. I will be starting a build thread in the next few days and keeping track of everything the family and I find as we navigate a really unknown road. Super excited and blessed to do this with my daughter and my son.

Thanks for making it this far and look forward to a long and trying road but glad I have a place I can come and feel like you belong when questions and issues arise.

Bill

Not knocking the idea of a 2JZ, but if you really wanted to be different you could keep it all Mopar and put a Hurricane inline 6 in the car. Way more fab work, but stock they make more than 500hp and can be paired with an 8HP for a sweet combo. Just have to figure out how to shorten the overall height to fit it in the car, they are stupid tall.

A YouTuber is running a stock long block Hurricane in a pickup and has run 8's in the 1/4 with it.

I know it violates the "JDM" checkbox. Just tossing it out there.

:welcome: from :canada:

Looks like you have an eager assistant to help you get the job done. Be prepared for a few purists that will not be impressed by your choice of engine. In my opinion, it's your car, make it what you're going to enjoy and be happy with.

As the owner of a turbocharged Honda V6 powered ford falcon I wholeheartedly endorse this debauchery. Congrats on getting back in the A body game. Looking forward to your build thread.

I appreciate the input but your exactly correct it doesn't hit the JDM checkbox. That's important to me to blend two passions into one. The hurricane would have been a sweet surprise when you pop the hood that's for sure.

Hey thanks for the welcome. I love Canada and spend many weeks in Quebec chasing gold. That's another hobby of mine I love to do. I know some will hate the idea of Toyota in a Dodge but that's the car world. I have built enough thru the years to know I really only have one critic to please and that's the guy building it and funding it. All are entitled to a opinion good bad or indifferent. Yes my son is chomping at the bit to get going. He loves anything that goes fast especially if it has a turbo as he enjoys the noises. He told me he had one request. I said what's that buddy? Daddy can it sound like a rocket ship. I replied if you want loud whistles and turbo flutters buddy nothing more will bring me joy then to do that for you

Haha I love swaps and that sounds awesome in your falcon. Those are not big cars either so I bet she hauls the mail. Something about high revving and turbo noises that just gets the blood going

I understand. And you are exactly right that it has to please you and nobody else.

If it even fit under the hood!

Those motors are stupid tall from the factory. Guy fit one in a Viper, so they can be shaved down, but still. Far as I know, no one has fit one to an A-Body.

I went looking for a new Charger with the turbo 6 to see if Dodge had reconfigured the motor to make it shorter to fit the car, but they didn't. The charge tubes over the VC are part of the problem and I thought maybe they would move those around. But all they did was add a bulge to the hood to clear things.

It’s a fun car. 2600 lbs, over 600hp and 18x10s on all 4 corners. I’m in the middle of phase 2 right now and that involves moving the engine 12” back and doing some sheetmetal work. And some rear suspension work. The front is dialed, but the rear needs a 4 link and a watts.

Yessir. Started life as a 2007 J35A3

Vorshlag is putting a J37 in a FRS. Not a swap I would have thought about for something like an A-Body, but kind of intriguing the more I learn about them. Good thing I don't have unlimited funds and time. :D

They run HARD in Miatas. I built a sandrail for a friend of mine and used a j35 mendeola combo. That car is a riot in the dunes. I was sold on the J35 then and knew I wanted to use one in a car.

I wonder if tilting it over 30 degrees to the passenger side would do the trick. Seems they had to do that once before.

I say, that the wheel of death to the Hurricane motor and make it FIT!!! :steering:

Here is what Boosted Motorsports did to gain ground clearance for his Viper install.

The oil pump hangs pretty low, so can't really go any further without some kind of a custom oil pump setup.

Nice thing is, it's a rear sump pan so there is some possibility of clearing a k-frame.

I say a death wheel has some real potential.
