Purchased both the TTI long tube headers and dual exhaust for my 1965 Dodge dart original 273 GT car. It now has a 360 magnum with 4 speed overdrive automatic trans. According to the measurements in the TTI instructions my motor is in the correct spot.

Going into this I figured the headers might be tight on the trans but would make the necessary modifications if necessary. Unfortunately, in addition to being tight to the trans it also hits the torsion bar on the passenger side so much that it is off about 1" to the right. I guess I'm going to get to heat and beat my brand new $1000 headers which makes me upset, just glad I didn't get them ceramic coated. Thankfully drive side fit just fine.

Now I'm having trouble with the dual exhaust as well. If I mount the headers connector pipe to the driver side header and slide on the mid pipe and muffler, the muffler hits the differential yoke. If I turn the connector pipe where it bolts to the header it will point about 3' under the car. WTF am I doing wrong here.

I've been building cars for 20 years and have built complete exhaust systems from scratch. This time I figured I would save some time and spend the money on something that just fits. Guess I was wrong, and I now think it is the most over priced piece of crap that I've ever purchased. Will definitely not be buying from TTI again in the future. I now need to cut it all apart and weld it back up so it actually fits correctly. About the only thing that might fit, is the tail pipes but even those have no clear directions on where to mount the tail pipe hanger and the muffler bracket. The directions really suck also. The instructions say to mount the muffler hanger brackets to the body panel behind the rear seat. Does that mean I have to cut a hole in the floor pass the muffler bracket through to bolt it up on the inside of the car? Maybe I'm over thinking it at this point due to my frustrations but what the heck.

Sorry for the long post I needed to vent after this one. If someone has any tips on installing this piece of crap please let me know before I cut it all apart.

Here is a picture of a 2 1/2" TTI layout on a '72 Duster 318 stock manifolds and a 904 transmission and 8 3/4 rear end, exhaust out the back.

May help to get a look how it looks installed under there.

Owner is a mechanic and installed himself, no special modifications needed. TTI had a special bend in the driver's head pipe to get around the driver's torsion bar. Had a mini starter so there was good clearance there too.

Good Luck

entire different world then an early abody....

we did a set of tti on a 66 cuda. they must have designed them aroudn slant 6 bars because 1" bars were a ***** to get them to fit around.. ended up getting them on without denting anything but they were tight as hell.. personally i think dougs on a early abody are probably a better fit since one tube is two piece and the tubes are smaller as is the collector.. tti exhaust wasn't an issue on the car.

have any pictures of whats going on?

As far as the tail pipe hangers go.......

My instructions said to use the supplied bolt and attach the hanger at the seat belt mounting hole (1971 Demon)

In the end, I pitched the TTI brackets and used a couple of universal brackets and made my own mounting holes that lined up.

BTW, my pass muffler is extremely close to the diff yoke (almost hitting it). I did have to heat portions of the system to massage it into place.

when i did the tti exhaust on our 70 dart i had to cut like 4" off the head pipe i think it was in order to get from there back to fit properly.. perfect fit after that..

this.

the mid pipes are designed long to work with their head pipes.

and even when you use their head pipes and mid pipes there's still some trimming to be done to get the mufflers set at the hangers.

I would first verify that what you have is the correct set for your application, then contact TTi before I cut anything up or got out the BFH. I have installed 2 sets of TTi headers, one on a 1970 Dart, one one a 1975 Dart Sport, both 360/727 cars. I also put the full 3 inch exhaust system on the 1970, in my garage with no hoist, only jackstands, in one Saturday afternoon, by myself, absolutely no problem with any of these.

Thanks for the reply. Not really much to see at this point since I am not able to bolt any of it up and have it end up in a reasonable position under the car. After I cool down a bit I'll take another shot at fitting things up. Do you remember or can you give me some approximate dimensions on the rear tail pipe hangers?

Thanks for the suggestions I'll have to check with them. The part numbers on the pipes match with what they say is supposed to fit and early A. I know things are extremely tight on the early A's compared to the later ones.

Please keep us posted. I was just thinking about getting a set for an early A-body. The pics they showed on their site looks like they fit ok.

I have TTI 1 7/8 on my 69 Swinger and they fit fine .
Might want to try a combination of thin and thick motor mount isolaters ?
Call tti and ask them . If that doesn’t work find an exhaust shop near you that can tweek and install them .

Yeah, the pipes are made long so they will work with either 107 or 111" wheelbase cars (Valiant/Barracuda vs Dart). Thus the 4" cut is sometimes necessary.

Please bare with me as I have to ask several questions. First is make sure engine and transmission mounts are in good shape. New is even better.
Critical because the Early A's are TIGHT fit. I see you did the measurements and engine is in the right place, great. Do you have the correct transmission cross member that has cutouts for the dual pipes ?
Did you read the instructions ? I am being sincere and in no way being a ***.. Instructions say start at rear of car and move forward
hanging the tail pipes and mufflers. I agree using different muffler hangers. What they send you is way overkill. I have used both theirs and universal. Yes you will have to drill for the passenger side hanger. Then the intermediate pipes
that will have to be cut to length to match your collectors.
There is a sticky of a complete start to finish install (Though they are TTI shorty's and it is a 68 A body) But the photos may help.
Last is I type slow and I see a few more posts made it before me. Again no dis-respect just trying to help.

Absolutely no disrepect taken and I sincerely appreciate the feedback. I have modified the crossmember per the instructions by TTI. My plan was to definitely start at the rear however I have no holes in my frame for even the tail pipes so balancing the tail pipe on stands and deciding where to drill holes for them would be an educated guess at best. I was hoping to at least get the midpipes and mufflers approximately in place to get a better idea on where the tail pipes and hangers will end up. Unfortunately, there are no dimensions on the tail pipe hanger position other than "placing the tallest part of the tail pipe" over the axle.

Thank you very much. It looks like you bolted your muffler hangers on the bottom of the floor. That make a lot more sense. Huge help and very much appreciated.
The TTI hangers bolt to rear seat belt bolts.
The rear seat belts have a nut welded to the floor pan. You Pull the rear seat, pull the bolt. Then reinstall the belts with a longer bolt and reinstall the seat. Under the car put the TTI hanger on bolt and install a washer and nut to install the hanger on the longer bolt. No new holes are needed.
Or more plainly.
The factory seat belt bolt is long enough for belts. So longer bolt is needed so you have enough length to acomadate adding a washer and nut to install the TTI exhaust hangers.

i don't have the car anymore, otherwise i'd go take more detailed pics for ya.

if i recall, the one side aligns the bracket with one hole that's already there for the factory hanger and then you pop holes for the other two on the bracket. on the other side, there's not a factory hanger (these early cars only came with single exhaust) so you need to pop the holes, but the dimensions are listed on the template. it's a little obtuse, but after staring at it (for longer than i care to admit) it made sense.

you do need to have the rear seat bottom out to make it happen.

not on the early cars!

Im not the sharpest tool in the shed, and i may even be a little rusty, but how about before you start hammering or cutting you consider buying a header flange, take it to a machinist and have him taper it so the header is angled just the tiniest bit so it clears the torsion bar? Use it in addition to the header as a shim, not to replace the flange. You may want to use spherical washers as well so your clamping surface is more even.

Yearly A Bodies WERE designed around the slant. The 63 models did not offer a V8 and were completely build for the slant. Falcon had a V8 in '64 so Mopar had to follow. They made a few mods to the firewall for '64 and shoe horned it in there. I will only use factory manifolds on the early A.
