1971 Dodge Demon Sold for $126,500 on Mecum

-
Again anything you just start off with a roof is NOT FOR ME. Even if it was 30k I would not buy it. And just because Mecum says it worth X dollars don't make it so. How many on here would have paid that for an a- body 340. It's just plain stupid.

LOL. I'd be willing to bet both of the cars you're calling junk are of a higher quality now than anything that ever left the factory. Factory welds were birdshit. Factory body tolerances were all over the map. Anyone with the skill to "start with a roof" and end up with car that nice has skills that far exceed those exhibited on the factory assembly line.

Yeah, if that much metal gets replaced you better be sure it was done by someone with the skills to do it. But if they have those skills, as the gentleman that restored that Demon clearly does, the end product is going to be better than what the factory rolled out.

If I were to pay that much money for that Demon...it would have to be completely accurate in every way, according to the broadcast sheet and fender tag. The blingy carb, white interior, etc...shouldn't be there in my opinion. It should have been restored to as built factory condition... just saying... again my opinion.

I know a guy who has a fully restored FC7 '71 Demon... original numbers # 340 4 speed car... black bucket seat interior...he did the work himself... I even donated a few parts myself, towards his restoration project...and his is just as nice, as the Demon in this thread.
He restored it according to the fender tag and didn't deviate from it, kept it as the factory built it originally. That's what "restored" is supposed to be...."restoring" it back to the way it was originally built.

Hey, neat for you. But if a carburetor is a deal breaker for you on that car, I mean, come on. You can change a carburetor in 15 minutes. Heck changing the interior out wouldn't take much longer than that, you're not the one doing the upholstery so if you're just writing a check and bolting in new seats it's real easy. Clearly this says more about you than the car in question.

100% original cars are statues for dude's garages. They don't get driven, they go to a couple shows a year and rot the rest of the time. You're a museum docent at that point, not a car guy. Some people actually like to USE their cars as, you know, cars. Hopefully the dude that paid for the 4 speed conversion got to actually shift that thing through the gears a few times and have FUN.
So, if it's that good, and he wants to sell it, the benchmark has been set by this car.

The value, as Rusty said, is set by the market place and this one knocked it out of the park because of its attention to detail and the finished result.

Here's a kicker for you.

If that Demon had rack and pinion steering, a 6.1 Hemi ,tubular suspension with an RMS or HDK suspension system, 4-link, coil overs, upgraded audio, it would have gotten even more money than what it sold for.

Restored is gradually being replaced by RestoMod as that's what most new buyers are most comfortable owning.

Yeah there have been lots of resto mods pulling in big money at auctions. Some buyers want the upgraded machines they want to drive them.

Exactly. The resto-mods are getting big money because there are actually people out there that want to DRIVE these cars. And those people understand that a bone stock 340 A-body restored to factory specs will get its *** handed to it in every performance category that exists by a V6 Camry. But that's not true if you're running a GIII hemi with upgraded suspension.

I guess it's in your name. Junkman.
i don't understand this reply? some sort of retort on my screen name? wow. original. goes hand in hand with your loser reply from earlier that was deleted by the mods because it was so highly inappropriate-- totally tone deaf.

i'm guessing that we've reached the zenith of your comprehension at this point; likely your intelligence as well. but do tell us more if only to prove the point.

I admit I have always enjoyed my old classics, be it a slant car or 440 and all in between. Some nut and bolt restos I DID, some parts cars, many just "drivers". I have had 3 hemi cars and non of those restored, projects.
I get the resto mod thing and yea in general, I feel a good one will bring more $ today than a good restored #s original. Where do they usually sell at? Mecum, BJ. That is where the $ are and the audience.

But every guy has his own person tastes. An *** for every seat!
I gave up wanting a perfect cat decades ago. Too perfect to drive, too many $ and work put in it to keep. Let someone give me my $ back and I will drive one not worth so much!

If I want to drive a "modern" car, I don't need a resto mod. Just a modern car! I want to drive the 60s old car for the experience it is. All because I remember it all from the 60s,70s, etc. How many people that buy a resto mod at Mecum were even alive in the 60s?

I have had two interests in my life in general, besides work and family. Quarter Horses and old classic cars. I have also been amazed all my life as to how the people in both endevors hate to ever give credit where it is due. Be it a great horse or a great car.

First of all I never said my charger was a Hemi so someone edited my post. Yea right I a sold a Hemi for 45k. Hey Mike you out there? Need some checking done. And by the way I have no problem with someone restoring a rusted car. Most people have reasons, maybe a family car or it's what they can afford. But what you are trying to convince me is a restored roof is worth. And Rusty were you calling me jealous.

Hey I not fighting with you Junkyardhero And I ain't got nothing to prove to you. But I know you are too far away to see my stuff or where I've been what I've done. My skills are probably not like yours. I only built protype and concept cars for GM and am long retired. You build what you want and pay what you want and I'll do the same. Good day to you sir and God bless you.

Well.. a professionally restored 1971 340 Demon, 340, with 4-speed and white interior is worth 126,500.00.

That's what it sold for.

That' s a fact substantiated by the op's original post.

And, again, it wasn't only a roof.

As for saying your car was a Hemi..

Heres what you stated in post 75.

That's why I and others thought you were saying it was a Hemi.

".... It was a number matching 71 Charger R/T Hemi 4 speed dana 60 car. All original non rusted body panels, original paint (red) car 44k original miles. Almost all original parts like block, Hemi trans, dana 60, wiper motor alt. ps pump, rotors calipers etc.. etc...."

Yeah it was his direct quote. Hemi car.

Besides all his nonsense aside, you're 100% right. It sold for what it's worth because someone BOUGHT IT at that price. That's what some cannot understand. You could not have stated that more clearly.

No you with your persistence pounding against me. But my god and Jesus may they bless you. Again, have a wonderful evening.

as jesus would say:

מי ייתן ותמצא את
השמחה שאבדת ואת
ההארה שאתה מחפש

Dog Bless, and all of that.

Sorry for all the confusion.

And yes I talk to them all the time and ask forgiveness as I will tonight. Not only for things I have done but for things I didn't do.

To each their own, I wouldn't pay that $$, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth it. Im more of a closest to oem type if I had a choice, but just because something is outta my budget and not in MY wheel house doesn't mean its over priced.
Well it is certainly very expensive!! Not really overpriced as the seller didn't set the price (audience does not know the reserve amount unless its $0). The buyers decided the price through their bids. Plain old supply (1 purple Demon) and demand (multiple bidders). Capitalism at work for a beautiful car. I'd be proud to park it in my garage for sure!!

The market?
One sale does not "make" the "market".
A sale occurs if a seller accepts a buyers offer.
The high bid at any auction, is just that and hopefully no one was "running " up the price, but if so, the buyer was willing to pay based on his last bid.

I love seeing any cool car, especially when someone else paid for it all!

Slang for an 18 spline A833, is "hemi" 4 speed. Just so the new guys know.

Why didn't the responder just say 440 HP with a hemi 4-speed or 440-HP with a 18 spline 4-speed ?

There were a few of us who thought this was being referred to as a Hemi and not just new guys.

As for "making the market', it is going to be very interesting to see what the next 1971 Demon restored to this level goes for.

I also think "running up the price" is a real thing.

Cheers barbee6043 !!

Same here thoughts were hemi car. I guess my small block 727 transmission is a Hemi since internals are Hemi. I will just call it Hemmey 727 to add more confusion. Like all the Hemi stuff everything is sold as now. Add Hemi its worth more.

I thought there was another thread where guy claimed he restored it for a customer and interior got changed from black to white, was an automatic converted to 4 spd, scoops and rear wing added. Guy said he make those changes during restoration because thats what customer wanted. Car looks like good restoration to me in the pictures.

Yes, that is correct. I know the guy who restored it and he actually neighbour. He does fantastic work.
