It would cost way more than $40K in today's prices, I got quoted $30K just to start on the resto of my 69 GTS, total body, paint, vinyl top, headliner, and install windows was $70-80K without any other interior work or drivetrain...
Yikes !!
Guess I'm out touch with the times.
Still better to buy one done. When I say done I mean runs, drives, stops, steers, being used regularly cause in reality they're never "finished "

There is no way that car is original, the engine paint is turquoise! LOL...

This is a low mileage 69 340 auto with factory A/C. Original body other than a fender bender back in the day. If someone was to give you a car such as this my opinion is it would cost close to th 40k to restore in today's prices ? Some may disagree. This car runs but everything is original and been sitting since 1983. Needs lots of love.
Just my opinion

Oh yea 40k don't go far anymore
Always cheaper to buy a built car then building

Barrett Jackson and Mecum have really driven up prices .
They completely over blow the worth of a so so car .
I understand,,,it’s money,,,,,but they will list something as a loaded option car,,,,and it will be basically plain Jane by the fender tag .
List it as rare,,,,and they are still plenty around .

And then there are the goofy buyers that pay the premium over sale price .
It’s all a Racket,,,,and the public has fallen for it !,,,,it’s entertainment TV !

I’m not against anyone making their money back on a restoration,,,,,this is the car hobby,,,and it’s really hard to ever recoup your cost many times .

I’m against people taking a junk parts car,,,,covering up a bunch of abuse and damage,,,,and pawning it off as a great restoration .
I’m sure there are workers at those auctions that can see poorly rebuilt machines,,,but will never say anything because of their jobs .

Not all of the cars are poor quality ,,,,but a fair percentage are,,, that’s why I never watch them anymore.
It’s just like reality TV,,,,all fake and made up .

Tommy

I get a kick out of Barrett Jackson
But I wonder how many of those 200k resto mods or restorations make money
Some have to have a couple thousand hrs in them
And you pay 200k on one can you drive it every day and service it
Or is it a drive once a month
Or just park it and stare at it

I agree.
I would never buy at an auction for a couple of reasons. One being, I need another car like a hole in the head. Another is most good cars sell themselves. No need to advertise. How many of us know of an uncle, brother, neighbor etc. that own different cars trucks ? These may have been long time ownerships. I've said many times "let me know if you decide to sell". Sometimes they come up. If the seller has an unrealistic price or you know the car is a Frankenstein then they may get advertised or sent to auction. Otherwise they sell themselves.

Auctions and going on a blind date are very similar. Not sure what you're gone get or if it's really what it appears to be.
Maybe it was born a six cylinder or maybe it was born a man ??
Just saying

Couple things to think about, one just because something is original doesn't mean you're going to be able to use it. it's broken or beyond repair or it just cost too much to restore it. The second is the amount of time and effort to bring a car in that condition back is a level of dedication few people have. So unless that is your forever car that you're going to marry and live happily ever after... Well you get the point. There are a lot of beautiful Darts and other A bodies around for the $30,000 range that need very little. And you can begin to enjoy them immediately. Last no matter what your quoted for a restoration chances are price will continue to creep as time goes on. And forget about it being done on time LOL.

So true. I have been to the auctions at Scottsdale many times. Some cars are obviously built for auction (corners cut, fresh paint defects, etc) and sell. Its the worst place to buy a car in my opinion.
Worked for Manheim Auto Auction as an inspector for almost a decade, I can definitely attest to this statement. A lot of painted over pigs. Once in awhile you'll find an unrestored jem. Very rare these days.

I went to a resto guy and enquired about doing body and paint on my car. He said he was retiring but what I should do is go buy one I could drive for $30 to $40k. Well, I fully expected I could get the one I had done for $40 so I didn’t take his advice. I now have a great car, absolutely solid after acid dipping and replacing everything that was needed; paint and vinyl top. Problem was the shop kept leading me on $10k at a time until I cried enough and brought it home to finish. I had spent four times my expectations and robbed my 401k to do it. Utter folly but they kept saying it was almost done and I kept shelling out money a little at a time. However, I’m now enjoying the work of finishing it up and never expect to sell it. My grandkids might; but not me LOL. Bright side; no shortcuts have been taken. It’s ready for another fifty years if gasoline is available that long.

Your story is very typical of price creep that I mentioned in my post. What do you do when they have your car taken apart, it's very very frustrating. But it sounds like you got what you wanted in the end.

I'm nearly finished my '70 Dart resto. I haven't added up the receipts but I'm sure I'm into it for $40K. The only thing I paid somebody too do was machine the block and heads and spray the car and rebuild the gearbox. I bought the paint, did all the metal and bodywork, rebuilt all the suspension and steering, upholstery, etc. While I am slower than a pro I am sure I have 1500 hours or more into it. Imagine paying somebody even for half of those hours.

If you did all the work yourself, kept it stock, I think 40k might be able to get it done.

Drop off at a shop say call me when its done that probably 80k or more. The odds of finding a shop to do quality work and actually finishing it are low.

Those project cars nickel and dime you to death. Its the $50 here and $100 there never seems to end non stop hemorrhaging bleeding you dry until its done.

That car 340 w/AC thats a winner. I love that color too.

I’ve done all the mechanical work. Just never tried body work or paint. Wish I had now. But ……… I do like the result.

20 years, all NOS parts, $35K body and paint plus $10K engine/trans/rear end, probably totaled up $80K altogether and then 2 weeks before finally driving again and 30 minutes to destroy it all...

most resto shops, or the places that are capable and willing to do this kind of work typically charge 100+ an hour, figure what it generally takes time to do specific tasks and that 40K for a resto starts looking real small real quick.

paint and body alone could easily be half or more of that figure!

Yea it depends on what you expect
That god i have a couple of friends with body shops that I do work for
And can do most myself
