65 Dart Wagon Conversion to a Sedan Delivery

I would like to remove the multifunction turn signal arm (wiper and cruise function) and replace it with either a plain arm or an early 70’s arm the the cruise function (I have a NOS one). i have an 80 parts manual but it’s not much help. If anyone knows how to remove the turn signal arm, please let me know.

Looks very similar to the 92 Jeep Cherokee column I’m going to put in my Duster. Mine is a floor shift column though.

Does yours have the multifunction or just turn signals?

I don’t need the wiper function on mine as I’m using the stock dash mounted variable speed wiper switch

IT AWESOME OYUER MOVING FORWARD ...ME ? I'm in the slow molasses mode doing little and it's not even that cold here! BUT I did get some door panels setup for a friend who want's custom door boards and vinyl, *got the door panels made ss they'll NEVER rot again on him also did some for my power window conversion dart so they won'tr rot ever again also

Forgot to mention this column has the metal mounting brace spot welded to the tube. To gain sufficient height did not use those plastic spacer things. Did have to trim the brace so the AC vent would fit. It’s all those little things that takes time

Fiddly stuff can eat up twice or more time than the time a body repair would take easily! I'm in the details on mine now tops going on and engine is going in again

Mine has the multi-function switch as well but I do plan on using it for my wipers since I’ll be doing a custom instrument panel as well as using a wiper motor with the intermittent wiper feature.

To use the wiper function on the M body column I would need an intermediate switch module and the wiper motor. I have neither and I would have likely had to plan for this (especially for the wiper motor) really early in the build. I’ll settle for trying to swap turn signal arms

2 steps forward 5 steps back! I was ready to install the instrument cluster after making sure all the wires going to the brain box were tight and secure. I routed the ribbon cable and temperature sending unit and oil pressure harnesses behind the driver’s side vent (1st step forward). I forgot that to install the instrument cluster I would need to drop the steering column (1st step back) but to drop the column the AC vent needed to come out (2nd step back). Got the column dropped and AC vent removed and got instrument cluster installed with all the OEM screws (major 2nd step forward). The heater/AC controller buttons finally aligned with the little faceplate after fighting with it (minor step back). Then I discovered that none of the controllers’s buttons would move as it’s a NOS controller I bought years ago (3rd step back) Thing is each one would move as they should when I bought it so i didn’t bother checking it when I installed it when building the dash. So I made the decision to remove the instrument cluster (4th step back) and then remove the heater/AC controller (5th step back). I found the same controller on eBay so it’s on order. I did set the cluster in place with a couple of screw till I get the new controller - I don’t consider this a step forward but will include a picture of what it looks like temporarily installed

My NOS heat/AC pushbutton controller is being delivered today. Hope to button that all back up tomorrow and get the cluster installed, steering column re-installed and AC vent back in place. Then onto other things

Got the new Heat/AC controller installed as well as the instrument cluster.

Started on assembly of the driver’s door - vent window assembly, door glass and the modified window winder assembly with the manual winder removed and power window motor installed. Got everything installed and found that where the gears mesh was chattering and operation was jerky. Got everything removed and found the motor slightly skewed and didn’t notice the problem. So tear everything apart and redo the attachment of the motor Reassemble the door components, ran multiple tests to insure the glass went uo snd down smoothly. Now both power windows are working and functional. Onto other tasks to get the Delivery done

Another change of plans (sort of). A local guy heard about my stroker kit and made a nice offer on the kit and 318 that the stroker was destined first and gave me a down payment on it.
Well, the wife of the local guy who had given me a down payment on all the stroker parts contacted me a couple days ago to tell me her husband had suddenly passed away and was there any way I could return the down payment. Absolutely not a problem!

So yesterday I contacted the machine shop that did my 65 heads and they are going to do the machine work on the block and then assemble the motor. After I get it back I guess I’ll bag it and store it for a future project

Got a bunch of the headliner retainer strips installed from the doors to the back by the rear window on both sides. Used stainless sheet metal screws to secure the strips. So it’s nearly crunch tine to at least set the headliner in place with the 7 bows into their sockets

A little more progress - headlights and buckets installed. While installing the passenger side headlight, I didn’t notice the socket was cracked when I built the wiring harness so had to wait on another HD replacement. The headlights are vintage Hellas; the sticker on the driver’s headlight states for off road use only so I bet they’re pretty bright by themselves. With my relays and upgraded wiring, they should be pretty decent for night driving

Am not sure if I’ll get to it today as we are going to the vet with a very sick dog but if possible The plan of the day is to get both carpet hold downs installed. Luckily there are still some original mounting holes by the rear seat as both front and rear complete passenger side floor plans were replaced. There are many mire mounting holes on the drivers side as only the front pand got replaced

The vet took x rays and an ultrasound which showed a mass on her pancreas. Tge vet suspected pancreatic cancer. They were going to keep her overnight to administer fluids and antibiotics; 2 hours later she aas gone. She was a rescue and think we gave her a good like the 3 years we had her.

So now it’s April 5 and time for an update even if it’s just little stuff. We have got a little work done - driver’s side brake line from the junction block to where the hose mounts is installed as well as both brake hoses. Also got the little metal splash shields installed (these are installed between the K frame arms). Also got the nasticated rubber splash shields installed. These “shield” the torsion bars at the lower control arm. I haven’t checked but there may be others by the rear torsion bars mount.

Also installed the driver’s seat back to the driver’s seat back as well aa the side panel and the power rack. I determined that there isn’t any room to install the power seat controls on the side of the seat to I think I’ll construct a panel on the front of the seat to hold the controls.

sorry to hear about your dog, they become our kids so it's really hard when they go. :(
re the seat switches, make sure the seat runners won't hit the panel when the seat goes all the way back. if it can maybe add a stop to the runner?
neil.

Thanks for your kind thoughts. I think I’ve got it sussed out. I hope to get started on it tomorrow. Pics to follow.

After we lost out Border Collie mix, we adopted a 7 year old Alaskan Malamute/Siberian Husky mix. Unlike those 2 energetic breeds Rocky is “lazier than mud” as my wife would say. Nevertheless he is a big good looking boy

Anyway back to the 65. I enlisted the help of a good Mopar friend to help install the headliner After checking each bow for proper location and making sure each bow would snap in place against the roof, got them installed in each listing and slit the listing so that the bow ends weee equal on both sides of the listing. Set the headliner in place and of course none of the bows snapped in place against the roof. Looks like the weight of the headliner was the culprit. The shop manual says start at the rear so we finally got the rear most bow in place. We had already removed the Bailey channel as our OZ friends call it. We got the headliner secured under it and the channel back in place. Next was secure the headliner at the front. Even pulling on it at the front, 5 of the remaining Bows refused to snap up to the ceiling. So tine to stop and regroup. TO BE CONTINUED

Next thing to add to the firewall is the driver’s side fresh air vent. I bought one with a working door hinge as so many are broken - the one originally on the car was missing the door all together. The vent needed to be cleaned, old hard foam Seal removed, door stripped of runny paint, painted and maybe even a quick coat of black on the vent. After removing the old foam seal and hand sanding the vent as well as the door, it got a couple light coats of satin black paint, new foam on the inside of the door and new foam seal on top. The seals were another super item from DMT - no they’re not sponsoring me - they’ve got great products that actually work and fit as they should. Vent Is now ready to install tomorrow!

Hello Dartman
Your indepth, and really good, post is 6 years old and may not work.

I am installing (trying to) this same unit in my '64 Dart and having a real hard time.
Perhaps you would be kind enough to help?

The used unit fits good, but I can't seem to attach the long "J" hooks in order to secure it.
I've worked for many hours and can't seem to slide them over enough to grab over the lip.

Is there a proceedure to secure the J hooks or is there something I'm Missing?

Many thanks if you can help!

Thank you,
Steve

Hi Steve

6 years ago when I first installed the air box ! My how time flies! I don’t recall how I got the J hooks into place. I did have to remove the air box a couple of months ago to route my Dakota Digital oil pressure and water temp harnesses behind it. I fought with the J hooks for hiurs and finally gave up. My Mopar friend stopped by one day and said he’d take a crack at it. 15 minutes later it was secured in place. Let me get ahold of him and find out hiw he managed it so quick. I’ll get back ti you
