I'm thinking about putting disc on my Demon. I'm not sure I want to convert it to lbp, but leave it sbp. What are my best choices to make the conversion and leave the bolt pattern alone. I even pondered with going with rear disc also.

if u go with big bolt u can use the pin type caliper like on the E bodies, but u have to change everything including to upper con arms...but i have it on my Demon and it work well...

Be carefull and research wheel choices with the scare bird set up. I was in contact and ready to buy when I found out I couldnt use my Cragar SS SBP wheels. They told me they were working on a new product for us SBP guys that allowed more wheel choices. They said 2 weeks, I kept checking back to see, and they had never posted any new product. That was nearly a year ago I think. Be sure to do research thats all! I still may go with them if they come up with a product that will allow more wheel choices.

Kelsey Hayes made a great set-up..................... That is what I'm going to use........

Just went to the scarebird site. Im a tad annoyed! The site has all these products and no links to see the actual items. There are many items and only a handful of links. They have rear kits for the 8-3/4 but no pics!
There is more information on EBAY for their products than there is on their own site!
Either way, if you can dig up some info, there has been a few guys to have installed that kit here on FABO. Dig around I have a thread from when I was looking and it has links in the thread to a lot of different products if I remember correctly

abodyfan,

I used the SSBC kit from Mancini for my '71 Dart GT. Very complete, albeit expensive ($830 to my door), and very easy to do. Plus you have the option to run the 5 on 4" (sbp) or the 5 on 4 1/2" (lpb) front bolt pattern. I kept the 5 on 4" (sbp) with my 14" x 5 1/2" Rallye Wheels because the car came from the factory with a 3.23:1 sure-grip 8 3/4" rear axle.

Dan

I now have the same exact rear as you. Thats why Im hesitant to switch over as well. I know I can get new axels, but then it becomes even more expensive just to switch to disc brakes. Im all about searching out a good deal to keep my build cost low. I have a tight budget! LOL

I also checked out scarebird's setup but a few things didnt add up to me so I didnt go for it yet, still running drums looking for a good kit. scarebirds setup uses 1990 celebrity calipers and 1991-94 Toyota Previa rotors. but why would he use these type rotors if there are so many newer cars that are very close to the 5x4 bolt pattern but in metric (5x100mm)very little mods would have to be made to the bolt pattern. such cars as the popular cavalier, and most of the chrysler products in the 90's and even still today such as neon use this bolt pattern

The Kelsey Hayes setup is the factory SBP A body setup, installed at the factory and offered on Abodies from 1965 - 72. The setups can be found in the parts for sale sections on this website as well as other Mopar websites, including www.moparts.com and www.slantsix.com.

The factory SBP Kelsey Hayes setup has two-piece rotors that are available new from Centric, 4 piston calipers, and a unique spindle.

One thing to consider whenever considering doing a disc brake conversion:
Try to get the entire complete disc brake component setup off the donor car.
Be especially aware that if you are moving to discs from drums, you will need a disc brake master cylinder and a disc brake proportioning valve.

If you moved to LBP, your front track would be different/wider compared to the SBP front track.

The LBP setup would require you also factor in the expense of moving to LBP wheels, LBP rear axles, as part of the LBP conversion.

Converting to LBP can be expensive when you factor in all of these changes, and the expenses for each part of the conversion.

Figure that a good SBP Kelsey Hayes setup can be had complete for $350 - 550, depending on the overall completeness of the setup, and the overall condition/reuseability of the setup parts included.

On this site someone recently sold a SBP setup with NEW rotors, Newly rebuilt Calipers, new wheel bearings and seals, and newer ball joints included with the upper control arms, for $525...

Hope this helps...

I did the SSBC kit. Expensive, but very complete, get to keep SBP and fits under 14" rally wheels.

Bolt pattern isn't the only caracteristic of a rotor. Diameter, thickness, offset, all come into play. I wouldn't want a rotor that was loose fit to the stud pattern anyway.

I think I might use the ssbc set up it seems to be what I'm looking for. Thanks for all the help.

But as stated it is not 5 on 4". To my knowledge nobody makes a 5 on 4" rotor. So I spent hours scouring NAPA books and other source to find the best match. Since no 5 on 4, bolt pattern was irrelevant - just thickness, width and offset mattered most, cost secondary. I selected the Celebrity caliper due to it's compactness, clamping power and cost. The Previa rotor is the biggest rotro we could fit inside the stock drum wheel.

Sorry about the website - I need to relearn how to work it as the kid that revamped it can't be bother by such mortal tasks anymore...

The factory SBP 4" rotor is available from a bunch of sources and is being manufactured by Centric.

Do a search through this forum for factory SBP rotors - you will find the sources, and a lot of availability.

Also, do NOT expect your local auto parts vendor to find the factory rotor, unless you are dealing with a parts man that knows his stuff, and has dealt with Mopars for a long time.

Well, which is it? They are widely available (O'Reilly, NAPA, Schuck's, Rockauto.com, Year One do NOT list them - only Autozone that I found) or your parts guy can't find them.... can't be both here.

If you do go the autozone route, they run $85 each. And the calipers run a cool $150 each. We were told by a Mopar-only vendor a few years ago when developing this setup that Dart, Duster and especially Valiant owners are a frugal lot (he used much less polite term). We keep that in mind here. Also, I highly doubt they will clear the stock 14" drum rims.

Search this forum and you will find all the sources you need, for the Centric rotors, and for calipers as well. Last fall the Centric rotors were available under $40 / each. Calipers can be rebuilt very easily on the bench, the pistons and seals are widely available. Mustang pistons for the 4 piston Mustang calipers of the mid-1960s cars are the same as the SBP K-H calipers.

If you want to buy calipers already rebuilt, here you go:

Rock Auto

Raybestos
FRC 4175 $61.75........$30 core
FRC 4176 $61.75........$30 core

CENTRIC also sells rebuilt calipers:
You can get rebuilt calipers on exchange from Centric. A shop/custormer of mine got these for under $70 each his costs.

Here is info. on SBP K-H rotors:

There are plenty of other sources for SBC rotors (made by Centric) for low prices, including Partstrain.com for $21 per rotor ---

Centric part number --> CE121.63005

Here is another site, listed it on moparts

http://brakeperformance.com/site/bra...0509&ad=direct
2 rotors for $76 plus free shipping...

Brake rotor part number ending in 63005 shows as a wagner replacement=centric= available

We are attempting to locate new hubs which have been next to impossible to locate for the SBC K-H setup...

The info. I just posted about the K-H Calipers and the SBP Centric rotors is only a couple months old, so these should still work.
The links shown are just a few --- there are many more sources you just have to spend time searching the web.

You may need to order off the web, as many of the local auto parts stores do not have experienced help that can cross-reference the K-H setup from the manuals.

DO NOT expect your local auto parts stores to locate and solve your questions on SBP K-H brake parts. It's been many members from this board experience that the auto parts counter people are not that interested in diggin around for the info. You may be fortunate and know someone at a parts store that knows older Mopars and will work with you, but for certain, you will find these parts on teh web. Patience and perserverance is your friend.

Much better - thank you. I will take a careful look, and maybe get a pair of sample to see if they indeed clear the drum rims as some claim.

For most current info. on SBP parts availability, please SEARCH through the first 6 - 9 pages of the BRAKE forum. You will find everything you need there.
