hey guys i got a 9.5" clutch in my 65 cuda and it is slipping after i did some small mods, it was new last year. I have rode it kinda hard but i have a feeling the clutch just can't handle the power of the car now. I only have small mods done to the 273 commando and when i shift from first to second it slips bad when i am really getting on it. It sometimes does it when i am accelerating hard in first and from second to third hard shifts. I want to replace it with a better one because i plan to spray the motor with a 50-100 shot of nos and it's not holding now. Anyone got a good line on 9.5" clutches? Everyone lists the 10.5" ones and my car doesn't have that size flywheel. Should i just upgrade to a 10.5"? and would i need to shim my starter? Help guys :)

To upgrade the clutch to 10.5 you need to change the bellhousing along with the flywheel. This may require a modification to the engine side bracket for the bell crank. That's what I did back in 1982 in the 66 Barracuda that lilcuda has now. The clutch lasted, but my fab skills were not that good back then and I had a lot of linkage related problems. I don't know what's available out there as an upgrade with your current hardware.

Bear in mind also that there is a lot of flex in the early a-body manual trans cars. Starting with the poor arrangement of the frame side bracket only being bolted to the inner fenderwell. I also used to watch the dash flex out when I pushed in the clutch pedal on that old 66. This was all compounded by the bad angles of things when I got done installing the bigger clutch. But, the clutch lasted a long time.

I'm still running a padal 10 in clutch with a local guy that built me a borg & beck 10 in pressure plate. This is with the little bellhousing and small flywheel. If you going to go with the bigger set by changing to the bigger bellhousing then Brewer's has everthing that you need.

i want to keep my flywheel and bell housing, can i use a 10.5" disk with a 9.5" pressure plate? has to be something i can do.

No, you can't use mismatched parts. If you want to keep the small bell and flywheel then you will need a custom 10" clutch set.

Jim is correct on this. You can't put a 10.5 pressure plate on your flywheel.

i wanted to try a bigger clutch disk and the same pressure plate, i know that the 10.5" pressure plate won't fit i had one accidently ordered and it was too big of course.

I see. With the 10 in. disk it would barely clear the bolts that held the pressure plate to the flywheel.

As I was building my 340, I knew my stock clutch wasn't going to work. After looking for a nice 9.5" or 10" clutch that could handle power, and not finding anything, my conclusion was that it was much easier just to upgrade to the larger bellhousing. The 10.5" parts are so abundant that it was just the easier way to go. Keep in mind though, that now I'm having problems fitting my Doug's headers, which were only made for the shorter clutch fork.

Hey Jasha, what about Brewer's. Is there clutch fork that they sell with their conversion shorter like the orginal?

From information from Brewer's, I think their fork is only 1.5" shorter than the regular 340 clutch fork.

I sent an e-mail to Brewers last week about using the later 340 bell in an early A body. This was their reply.

Bellhousing Ballstud brkt #BSB636
Adjuster rod kit #AK484
Clutch fork pivot (inside bellhousing) #AK636
You will also need a short 10 7/8" B/E clutch fork (#CF702) to make
everything work together.

I'll be calling and making an order tomorrow

Cool, I think that is just a little longer that stock then. Ya, if I was doing it over and didn't have any part then heck ya. You'll have the big clutch to deal with. Cool, don't forget we like pictures.
