Can a garage be too big?

-
Oh hell no. I watched a show many years ago, some old rich guy in Washington State, had more cars than you could ever imagine. The grandson was doing the tour for the show and said his grandmother describes the house as your average 5 bedroom, 400 car garage :toothy7:

He also had several other locations with more cars, that old dude is my hero :notworth:

I saw this place when I was in Washington State last year...wonder if it was one of his?

As soon as I saw it I knew I'd found my dream home...:farao:

I don't think so, he literally had about 1000 cars in 3 or 4 sites so each building was huge. He had cars from every era, it was amazing

There is a general law that says a man will accumulate as much xxxx (junk, projects, precious possessions) as he has room to store them. I have found that to be the case and am considering building another 35 x 40 just for the toys that are done and ready to play with.

my wife needs to read this one. our first house we bought was a forcloser, lukily it was not trashed. fixed up the house built a 26x30 with 11' cieling. used a pellet stove for heat and ac unit in a window. worked out great. then after the kids were born (twins) she wanted to move closer to town and family. sold house at right time and bought a new house in the process of being built. 1 car garage. added second with master bed above with 11' ceiling and a main wall down the center. dam I miss my garage. now have 2 enclosed car ports, bought 2nd hand to store my stuff in. still dont have the comftarble work area I used to. so at times some stuff ends up outside in order to work and I hear "why is that junk" in her words out there:violent1: some day I will have my little house big garage

oh yeah and the garage makes everything smell. sorry for the rant, but as you know I can go on and on

The width is very small and I must be careful with the consumption of donuts ...

I was told a "long" time ago, figure how big you want your shop to be, and then double it. That way you should have room for your toys and all the other things that come your way.

It doesn't seem to matter how big you build `em, they always fill up and are too small. It's like the movie Field of Dreams.....build it and the junk will come. :D-

I have a 32 x 50 main shop and a 24 x 30 for storage. Plus an 1 1/2 acres of outside storage.

i dont think so i have a 32x24 and need more room now...but my shop was out of old wood i could get and need to complet the other side..

Yeah, they can be too big. If you're just operating off of a paycheque, you need to keep and eye on the heating/electical costs and how much the land taxes cost. Sometimes it's possible that too big a garage can affect the resale value of a house, plus it may limit the number of potential buyers. Too big a garage could also make you a night time target for the lowlifes. If you are not somewhat organized, too big a shop can become your own hellhole of a mess. If the wife is not on board with the big shop concept, the marriage could get a little dicey.
Having said that, my shop is 100 X 40 (built in two stages as we could afford it)and the (heated) one attached to the house is 28 X 30. I think it is costly to heat and I think the taxes are too much. my wife is on board, our dogs would eat the lowlifes, I'm pretty organized and neat, and we live on 17 acres (farm) less than 10 minutes from town.

The wife told me that when we bought this place, I could build any size garage that I wanted, as long as it was smaller than the house. SCORE!
The house is 1700 sq ft. The shop is 1608. I win!

add another one to bigger garage than house. and i still need another building the same size. need one to work on the projects, and one to keep em in once there done!!

We are down sizing from 3300 sq ft w/2 car garage to 2100 sq ft w 4 1/2 car garage. Needless to say I'm a happy camper.
