And you didn't invite all of us to come along with you. How bad could it be your girlfriend and 19000 of your best car guy friends.

Have a good time and be careful down there.

I need to look up where south America is :read2:

I liv in the south :read2: ta mid south of America :-D
So you must be leaving the country of Canada 8)

I'm so envious. It will be a trip of a lifetime. You will be amazed by the kindness and fortitude of the people and the abundance of the land. I bet you'll go back again. Two months is the way to do it, a week or two is not enough. Bring some small gifts. Small metal LED flashlights are very welcomed. Stop by the mall and pick up the little free samples of perfume and cologne. If you do any driving, be careful and don't speed.

Thanks guys, we're pretty excited. We're backpacking the whole thing. First we're living in a house in Guatemala for a month, and seeing all the sights, including the ruins at Tical, volcanoes, wildlife, etc. Then we'll be travelling around for a week, through Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and then living in another home in Costa Rica for a week, and then a cabin on a small island in Panama for 2 weeks. There has been lots of planning, but it should be worth it.

Mike do you still want the parts I've been holding for you???.

Get a hold of me please.

Todd

Why do the house sink?

Hey Mike, hope you and the better half have a great trip! I would love to do it, but I gotta see the western half of this country 1st!

Why do the house sink?

the ground is barley above sea level and they built some of their houses on slab foundations which shift overtime and some sink at corners of the houses... i think the new construction houses are built on pikes to allow them to "float" ontop of the ground better.

well thats what they told us when i took a tour in early 2000. some houses were leaning at a 20~30* pitch and people where still living there. it was crazy.

Wow!! Lucky for you two. I have a facination with South, and Central America. Wish I could come a along. Be safe Bud:icon_smi:

Apparently we get internet at the place we're staying, so I can check in on FABO every once in a while.
For those of you who haven't been here, its pretty wild. The towns are all pretty poor, the people are super friendly, and hardly anyone speaks English, which unfortunately for me is hard because I have a hard time with Spanish.
There are literally thousands of ancient Toyota pickups, all falling apart, people riding in the back, cows riding in the back, a bunch of dogs in a cage, etc etc. Semi's are missing hoods and fenders, the cars and trucks are either brand new, or beaten up so bad that they would get a vehicle inspection the minute they entered North America. The people drive like maniacs. The whole city of Guatemala City is fast moving, way faster than any city I've been to.
But the place we're at is absolutely amazing. We're in a condo type place, on the side of a huge lake, surrounded by mountains, trees, wildlife, etc. We are near a tiny town built of shacks with tin roofs, woman carrying all their items on their heads, children making clothing, wild dogs running everywhere, 3 wheeled tuktuk's (taxi's), roads carved into the mountain side.. I could go on and on.
Hope everyone's projects are going well.

I took some pictures of our place, and the view from it. Enjoy.

Thanks for the narrative and the view, I can close my eyes and almost feel the evening breeze off the lake.
