63 darts set up for drag racing

-
LOL I'm in the same boat, as you I will be building my 63 soon, I'll keep an eye out on this thread to see what comes of it. There is one really nice 63 on here that Billyrae built. I can only hope that my dart comes out as clean as his.

story is, in '63 they rolled this off the truck at my local direct connection dodge dealership (white bear dodge) rolled it into the back door and started gutting it.
the mechanics would take it out on the weekend and race it. at first they had a 273 in it for a while then later on put a 340 in it and got it down to 11.0s. pulled it off the strip in 72, sat since.
car has oxy welded roll bar and frame connectors, that should cert. spb wheels with a 8 3/4, wheel tubs, radiused wheel wells with conduit. stewart warner guages. get this, they made a mold of the rear bumper and made a hand layed fiberglass one.

im planning on putting a 500hp 440 in it.
still looking for more info about it or some pics from its prime.

Here is the link for the pics of my build.. took lots of time and MONEY... but came out pretty nice.. ...the BAD news..i busted a rod in my 572ci Indy Maxx Motor.. cracked the block along the panrail and very light damage to one of the chamber ... but will be putting together a 440 TEMP. motor to have fun while i have this block repaired and then rebuild as a 604ci motor...thinking about building a Blower motor..Who knows.. good luck with your build and if there are any questions you have let me know.. maybe i can save you alot of headache.... http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=8QZOXDNmxcs3Q

Thanks for the vids and photos. She's a beauty! toolman

Mine was way not that nice, but it did have a 451 B block in it, and it was built on a "side job" budget. Mounts were Street Master mounts out of Minn. I believe. Look them up online, they were about 150. Basically, the mounts were hinges with a poly lined shaft and a bolt through that. one side went solid to the frame and the other side went to the block. The trans mount was stock. 727 was used and I pounded out the trans tunnel seam and put 3/4 nuts as spacers between the K and the subframe, like the early hemi cudas did. This lowers the K which gives you more room under the tunnel for the trans. Headers were modified Pro-Parts Semi fenderwells with 2 mods. 8 cylinder was sectioned and taken in about 2 inches behind the pass wheel to tuck closer to the the frame, the 5 tube was cut and rerouted around the idler arm and torsion bar. The rest of the headers were pretty much a bolt in fenderwell style with a trim close to the driver shock tower. The idler arm hit so I clearanced the pipes with a few dents but should have rerouted those higher to clear the centerlink all together. Hi-po logs fit without drama and would be used if I did it again. Pan was typical B in an A pan with the factory dimple, maybe 169 pan? Radiator was Jeep Cherokee 3 core, ignition was Mallory Hy-Fire 5 analog Museum piece. Thing looked stock sitting in there. I had it open at a local cruise and half the guys didnt even notice the non stock motor (or didnt care?) One guy flipped so my work was done ;-)

Time saver: move the motor back in the chassis and use motor plates with a reconstructed tunnel. Thatll make generic headers fit better as later 67 longer wheelbased Valiants had the steering more forward in relation to the motor.

No longer in possession of the borrowed 451 so its back to an Edelbrock injected 403 stroked 360. Not a bad fall back motor

thanks, i kind of want to emulate your motor mounting set up but i want to keep my k frame.

yeah im thinking im going to have to cut out the inner fenders and cage it all in, ill go with rack and pinion, do a front plate mounted to the cage and move the motor back and down, the tunnel is cut out anyways.

Well if you decide you dont want to take on this Big Task..mine is for sale now.. i have found a tube chassis car that i can get into if i sale my dart..only 2 years old and has only about 12 passes on the car.. everything brand new..

billyjay,I,m interested in how well your fronts cleared the fenderwell hedders in the wheelwells?I had little dinky 14 inch ProStars on my car,but have now put some 4inch 15,s up front.Just curious if you used any spacers to bring them out any?

Well Only the car is for sale.. the 572 indy motor i am keeping.. too much invested and i need it to go into the new tube chassi car my cousin has.. he bough Darryl Aldermans 02 pro stock Neon and now doesnt need his car so i am looking to upgrade... Peety...i have some pics of my headers and i didnt do anything other than install my wheels..i use the largest tire i could get in the wheel well without touching as i turned the tires.. i have a 24" up front.. ill try to post some pics for you..

Bill, How much are you asking for your roller? Just curious.

I have it listed for 14K as a roller but if i sale it to a member of one of the mopar site i use then it will be 12K Firm.. over 16K just in the car..thats just material, parts and paint/body work..

I am building a big block 63 Dart. My shake down engine is a 10.1 383 w/Stealth heads, .528 Mopar cam, RPM intake w/750 Holley. I will be using a low gear 904 and a Dana 60 rear. I will probably initally use a set of magnum manifolds. I have Pishta's headers which may go on the next engine which is a 500 low deck. That is of course after I sort out the chassis. I also have a abody Hemi 4 speed setup that I may play with at least with the 383.

az do you have a build thread or pics?

No I don't have and build pics yet as I need to get my driver 63 Dart back up from my 904 update. The car in my avatar. I am getting rid of the push button stuff and I put in a low gear lockup for the street. It is a bondo bucket from Pennsylvania.

I just picked up an Arizona rust free two door 64 Dart 150 post running 6 cylinder car for $750. I plan on completely stripping my tan 63 and putting everything into the 64 for my daily driver. A lot of work but with the bondo the 63 car has very little value here. Right now it is over a 100 here every day now for the next couple of months, so that work won't take place until after then.

After that.... I will get to my Big Block 63 Dart project. I have another California/Arizona car that I am going to put in a fresh .040 over 10.0 383 into. I have Stealth heads, RPM intake w/750 Holley for it. All of the machine work has been done and I just need to assemble it.

For the trans I have a JW bb to 904 bellhousing and I will build a suitable low gear 904 for it. I plan on a minitub and spring move to accomadate my Dana 60 and Cal Trac suspension.

Besides the fact that it is hot here in AZ now I have also downsized from a 3 car garage house to a 1 car garage in an apartment. I have **** scattered all over the place. At least until I run out of friends.

Right now my driver is my Harley dresser which I may try to sell after the 64 Dart conversion is completed. If I do then I will be able to get a move on the drag car. Otherwise it is going to be the typical 4 year project.

I'll be happy right now to get the tan 63 up to play with. It has a 360 w/2.02 heads, Comp solid cam, Performer intake w/Carter 600 carb. Also has Doug's headers into a 2 1/2 TTI x pipe system. Low gear 904 going to a 3.55 8 1/4 rear. Complete disc 4 1/2 disc brake conversion. I would like to upgrade the distributor and maybe the intake manifold and then call the mechanicals done.

Here are a couple of pics.

Mike
