RIP Dodge Dakota 1987-2011

-
Still have my 89 Shelby Dakota since day one - actually in the process of stripping and prepping for paint and new stripes. It's going to become my daily driver again and then we start on my son's 65 B'cuda....

ahhhh. the smaller trucks never made much sense to me. maybe if they were better on fuel than they are. you can buy a full size for the price of most smaller trucks.

well i have two points.

1. not everyone needs a truck for reasons that would justify the lesser mpg of a fullsize. Its minimal in the dakotas because of nearly similar engine choices w/ minimal weight differences, but in other brands there is a solid difference.

2. fullsize trucks have such a clumsy handling feeling for DD duty. Typically the compact/midsize trucks have more a car-like feel.

For better or worst Fiat is having a very positive effect at Chrysler under the Mercedes Benz umbrella the Germans did nothing but restrict what engineers wanted to build and rape the bank accounts
With Fiat we are able to design and build vehicle that rock the Challenger would of never happen under Benz
Whether you like it not small cars are coming our government artificially controls the price of gas, average cost in Europe 8 to 10 bucks a gallon

I'm surprised it lasted this long with the current body style. The person(s) who looked at that and went "Yeah, that looks good, go ahead with production" need to look into another career.

Here is a picture of the new viper. Badass if I must say myself.

I like mine way better over my old S10. I have a 3.9/auto that runs pretty good and gets me 20/hwy. The fat azz that owned it prior broke the left side of the drivers seat down. As soon as I find a good used seat it will be a comfortable ride. And it's my fav. color. toolman

*fingers crossed* for a 2dr SRT8 model. I would love to see the 2dr hotrod wagon brought back to life.

Never seen nor heard of an suv or a truck flipping over with-out plenty of encouragement. I have known hundreds of people who own suvs and trucks. Several were flipped over. Guess what???? Operator error. People who drive irresponsibly or simply haven't the ability to drive tend to expose the limits of vehicle's safe operating parameters. Then the same people ***** and complain and make a federal case about the vehicle when it is 100% operator error.

Nothing is safe when in the hands of incompetent operators.

Half the people on this planet could F up a steel ball with a rubber mallet and blame the entire thing on the steel ball engineers.

personally I dislike suv's-trucks on the roads. Why, they are hard to see in front of, they roll over too easily, they do more damage to cars when in a crash.

Cars you can see through the back window the other cars in front, cars wipe out going too fast in a turn, far better than rolling over and in a crash its fair game.

Trucks-suv's do have their place and are needed, just too many folks use them when a car would do the job better.

Over in New Jersey those high school students got killed when the young driver lost control braking for stop traffic, if they were in a full size car--like a new Charger, the accident might not have even happen. Cars rarely flip unless they hit something.............

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — A sport utility vehicle carrying eight members of a southern New Jersey high school football team crashed Saturday on the Garden State Parkway, killing four players and injuring four, authorities said.

It wasn't immediately clear where the teenagers were coming from or where they were going when the SUV crashed at about 11:45 a.m. The crash, which occurred in the southbound lanes of the parkway near exit 38A in Egg Harbor Township, created lengthy traffic jams in the area for most of Saturday afternoon.

The driver apparently lost control of the SUV as it went around a crest in the road and came upon heavy traffic, said Sgt. Julian Castellanos, a state police spokesman. The SUV overturned several times, ejecting two passengers, one of whom was struck by a passing car, Castellanos said.

The driver and two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene; a third passenger died at a hospital. Four others were taken to hospitals for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.

Very nice truck Mike I like the color as well there is a Challenger in that same color at my local dealership.

Sad, the wife and I love our 99 Dakota.

Your 99 Dakota was a good looking vehicle, as was my 90, but the Germans killed the Dakota when they made it look like a "rockm-sockm" robot. Could they have intentionally made it any uglier?

No insult intended to any of those owners, but I didn't like it, and the numbers would back me up.

Once again Ma Mopar missed their own boat. They stuck the 5.7L Hemi in a few Jeeps but they wouldn't offer one in the Dakota. I guess they wanted to protect the ancient 360 as the workhorse and sport engine. I would have bought a Dakota with a 5.7L Hemi with the multi-displacement function. "Yeah, it's got a Hemi in it."

Read somewhere the Dakota project leader quoted saying it would've required front end changes to put the HEMI in the dakota and the $$$ for doing that was cost prohibitive.

Was waiting till 2012 to buy one hoping they might change the front end to look like the latest durango's which I think look Tit's

Currently looking for a 06-07 .... can't stand the look of the 08-11's

Miss my 00 V8 4x4 sport too much.... the stratus isn't cutting the mustard any more.

...And when the 5.9 was replaced with the 4.7, there went the low end torque which really killed towing.

Gotta disagree with that statement. My dad's '02 Quad Cab 4.7 + 5-speed stick had towed my Demon and also towed my '84 Caddy Limo with no problems at all. He said the 4.7 had plenty of power for towing.
