How many assemble their own engines... and how many of you do not

well i was told by my boss something that i heavily beleive in...

somebody can build you a motor and what ever... but its up to you to make sure the clearances are right and everything is happy...

as for me i do as much as i can... assembly, block prep, bore notching yadda yadda...

this last time around i had the machine shop assembly my 416, other wise i can and have built alot of motors in my time.
 
I've been rebuilding my own engines and transmissions for 40 yrs. Started out at 15 wrenching on motorcycles and snowmobiles and progressed from there. I also do my own machining, not balancing, as long as a friend of mine lets me work in his machine shop and use his stuff.
 
Have assembled several motors in the past. The Demon has one of my builds, the Dart does not (head never removed from engine).

I am not equipped to do my own machine work. Familiar enough to have specifications and check the work when it comes back.
 
Hell yes!!! Now that's what I call ME time; i assemble all my short blocks and do all my own porting and polishing... When my wife gets mad at me i just tell her;I know your mad at me so I will punish my self and go to the GARAGE and stay there until i have learned my lesson......

I used to work in a speed shop.Basic engine assembly,cam degreeing.Head porting,moderately.Wish I had a valve cutter.I have two good machine shops in my area.
 
I have always done my own assembly, several of the engines that I have built are still out there running around.

But these were basic, mild performance, rebuilds.

I'm really considering having my 340 professionally assembled, it's a more critical build and honestly...... I think I have forgotten most of what I knew 15-20 years ago when I lived and breathed all this stuff.
 
340,that is one of the reasons you came here.I did the same.
 
I have assembled a few motors and dabble with machining from time to time when I get access to the college auto shop, although lately I've been trying to gather as many tools as possible so I can do as much as of my own work as possible. Mainly head working tools.

By the way, 805moparkid, that Slant Six in your pictures looks pretty killer man.
Nice job.
 
assembly is the name of the game,also mild porting (bowls) sadly too poor to machine my stuff myself.if i had the tools...
 
How many of you members assemble your own engines, heads or even machine/or clearance for parts install?

Fred (my racing partner,) and I, hired the boring, balancing, valve job, crank-turning, and cam bearing installation. The machine shop installed the crank. We did everything else (cut the ring end-gaps, installed ans degreed the cam, installed the pistons and oil pump/distributor.)

The machine shop set the valve spring installed height, because they had an "installed height" valve spring tester; we needed a certain amount of valve spring pressure on the seat and fully open... had no way to check that, so the machine shop was hired to do that.

So, we still felt like they didn't really "build" the engine... we actually assembled about 90-percent of it.

Machine shop does the boring and line bore all my cranks and install cam bearings..
They build my heads...
I plastic gage and cut rings and build my own, But it has been over 5 years for me.
I bought a newly built 360 one time and I tore it down to the crank bearing and checked everything and the man I bought it from said what the hell!! why did you take it apart
I told him that's the way I roll :happy6: as Tony Fields would say :glasses7:
I did not tell him I found 3 rod caps :blob: that was not torqued down enough ( how ever you spell it )

about 3 318 and only 1 360.
 
This thread came along at the right time. I've done the tear down/assembly on two motors. On this current build I've done the tear down, but am debating on weather or not to do the reassembly? After reading this thread though I think I'll get the shop to do the full long block.(lotta new parts... don't want to screw it all up)
 
I build my motors ands other people i do head work and put them together.:burnout:
 
Machine work and cam bearing are left up to the machine shop. crank, pisons I've done.

Only cleaned up the bowls and ports on the heads.
 
I build my own engines.
Since I've only got a lathe and a drillpress in my garage, boring/balancing/valve job/milling is done by a machineshop.

I did recently made myself a cambearing tool on the lathe. Makes replacing cam bearings so easy it like taking candy from a kid :)

This thread has confirmed my belief that most of DO build our own stuff, thats most of the fun, right?

Ive been told by many lames on here that this is not the case and that my way does not cater to the masses, just the minority.....but thats been proven farse by this thread.

I have had nothing but an up hill battle in this hobby, nothing but doubters and experts telling me im wrong ...just before I prove Im right, over and over agian....

Ive been losing interest in this because of it, so im going away for a bit.

my dad and I put together the 318 I've been working on...tore it all down, cleaned it up, honed the cylinders, washed the block, installed new rings and bearings, new cam, lifters, rockers, pushrods, got a set of rhs heads from brian, and we put it together.....i guess ill find out how we did once it's time for start up and break in......lol

well take it easy justin. hope youre not gone too long as i enjoy all the info you post...


id like to add that i do not have the equipment or knowledge to perform machine work on block and heads, i leave all that to the machinist....however, i did have my 408 bottom end put together by hughes, and top end put together by a local machine shop, and they finished it off and dyno'd, and tuned it real nice...
