Gas gauge on my 71 dart works one day ,the next it's not.
Replaced sending unit and ground strap.Still have problems.
Mike:dontknow:

Are you sure ya gotta good ground on the tank,....maybe the printed circut board on the instrument cluster has a hairline crack in It...just a thought...

My guess is the stamped tin nuts that attach the gauge contact posts to the pronted circuit board are loose. They shouldn't be extremely tight but just snug. Overtightening will do more harm than good.
You might reach it from underneath with a 3/8 deep socket and 1/4 drive disc type ratchet. Disconnect the negitive battery cable before going at it from any direction.
Good luck

It could also be the voltage limiter on the back of the instrument cluster. Do the othere gauges go out with it or no?

poor ground yes, I would think a PC board crack would be pretty rare on these

Definite possibility

Along with the good advice so far, don't discount a bad connection in the sender wire especially the end connector at the tank, which is subject to corrosion and internal breakage.

I had my gas and temp gauges go out at the same time. There was a burned trace on the instrument panel circuit board. It looked as though it started as a small crack and then arcing lead to the burning. Worth a look for sure.
