Feature Magazine Coverage for Scrapyard Scamp

Crap motor; said the man with the Mexican v6 collection of modern mopars designed to crash.

Do tell how an inline six cylinder with a cross flow aluminum hemi head with 4 valves, driven by overhead cams and a forged crank, balanced to shoot the moon in RPM is a crap motor. School all of us on how VVT is a bad thing and how the geometry of an inline six is inferior to a V configuration 6. Is it the harmonics of a V6 rattling itself apart that sold you? I'm dying to hear your insight on engineering.

I'm not sure that the car's owner/ builder deserves any kind of boot, but running your trap like that in his thread might call the same attention from a moderator for one in your direction, to heed your atrocity of a contribution to an awesome thread, like this.

Can't wait to see the article on this car! I've been reading up here, on it over the past few months.

Good work, Dave!
i argee with the guy that says nice car but crap engine.

Not sure I can agree with crap engine. You may not like the engine in a Mopar but these are about as strong as engines get. The horsepower potential is amazing on one of these.

why would u want to put a junk import engine into a classic mopar? you hurt all the value of it big time the car. you might as go get yourslf a rice rocket then to.

I seriously fail to understand the need for people to senselessly bash others for their efforts and for what makes them happy... I mean really, its pretty much 5th grade-ish.. There seems to be a lot of threads going around lately about society's current rudeness and lack of respect.. Its not hard to see it, thats for sure..

See.. I personally would want to keep a Mopar all Mopar.. or a GM all GM, or whatever, but thats just my opinion, and just the way 'I' would do things.. but I would never bash someone for having a different view, or a different way of seeing and doing things.. that uniqueness and creativity is part of what makes us all different.

I commend him for thinking outside the box, for trying to interest others, for showing what else can be done... and besides, there is a phrase I very much live by, 'his names on the title' .. its his car, he can build whatever he chooses... I say if people dont like it, move on to the next thread.. throwing insults and bashing ones efforts is just hurtful, pointless, and dumb..

Well said!

Different strokes for different strokes, I suppose. Execution on the body and exterior are first rate. Power seats with bun warmers in an A-body. Who'd have thought? I probably would have done something to break up all the black in there.

The engine is an interesting choice. For all that Mopar howled about a /6 to create a lower hood line, here's a 3.0 liter (bigger than the 2.7 originally stuck in there) upright six in there knocking out 3 X more power with better fuel economy. Did you give any thought to the /6 from BMW?

IMO, it's better for a car that has been fixed up this well to roll with a t/c'd rice burner motor than to not be rolling at all or worse yet to be rotting away in someone's barn or backyard. What I see here, on the other hand, is someone's vision for what an A-body might be like had Mopar been on the forward edge of engine development instead of band-aiding the Mitsubishi 3.0 to run in minivans.

Your car, your money, your decision!!!!!! I prefer a mopar in a mopar, or even a mopar in a chevy (lol). This is a cool build, something different.

I like different, I have a 37 Plymouth coupe with a 440 and a 66 dart 270 that I saved from the owner taking to the scrapper, I'm in the middle of doing something unusual with the dart. It's gong to be a mopar in a mopar but some of the haters won't appreciate it. Oh well, I will always accept donations to change it......

AMEN BROTHER, AMEN!!!Back in the mid to late '70s, my racing buddies and I would talk about how a redesign of the slant to a flow through dual overhead cam head would probably help Chrysler instead of rebadging the Japanese products.

Awesome car man. I appreciate all of your hard work and effort to make this car what it is. The Toyota Supra is still one of my top 3 dream cars, and I will definitely own one simply so I can drive and tune this motor. It really is an absolute powerhouse, and its dependable.

Don't listen to the haters. You did what you wanted and saved a Mopar from the crusher. You should be damn proud.

Let me say it this way. If this was a rare car I would have kept it bone stock. This is a car built to drive on tour to help establish dialog with a huge cross section of enthusiasts. We are doing just that.

I appreciate all the kind words and I recognize those who have a hard time finding something nice to say. In any event we are all having dialog today. I wish we could all meet up and go for a ride.

who cares. everything is nice but the engine.

Not sure what I hate most.
The engine or the Fram sticker on a gloss black hood.

Not my cup of tea,but well done.

You know what there's going to be nay Sayers in anything people do that others are jealous of. People are just afraid of things they don't understand. My hat is off to you for doing something different that nobody else has. They can talk all the **** they want but hand them a cutting torch and the same car and see if they could pull off something half as nice as that. I've seen pictures of some of these guys that love to bash others projects and let me say they are one step up from rolling piles of ****. Way to bring attention to other forms of motoring where classic mopar is pretty much non existent. Granted the tuner thing is not my cup of tea but I respect those supra guys especially for squeezing that kind of power outta them suckers and that car would be my first import choice. Like my old neighbor would say " don't be a hater, be a congradulata "
Thought this was a group for people who encouraged the idea of bringing old forgotten dodges and Plymouths back to life. Just sad it has to come from people that share the same hobby as us. Derogatory comments like that just explain the mental capacity of these cousin f"@&$&g idiots.

I love unusual swaps, and this one is right up there. I personally would prefer to see it all Mopar, but Mother mopar has let us down many times over the years, so I can understand the need/urge to defect. I would love to see this built to 700hp! Nice work!

To the nay sayers: What about all those old Mopar hemi's in the rat/hot rods of other makes? Blasphemy or cool?

Guys,

I'm proud to report that an A Body Mopar will be featured in a magazine that we don't ever get much press in. While I can't reveal the book just yet it is an honor to get press on the car and hopefully it will serve as a big thanks to Tim Skardoutous, (Forced 340), Peter Bergman, Bergman Autocraft, (GMachineDartGT), Greg Banish, (My Calibration Partner) and Clark Peterson, who worked with me to build the car. This was a hard job to do in a short space of time and Tim's fabbing skills made the car possible.

It's been a long and stressful year only to have to press the Scamp into tour duty this June with HRPT, Long Haul, 1,600 Miles @ Car Craft Nationals, Woodward Cruise with another Southern tour coming in September for Nopi, and Fram customer visits. I've resisted the huge temptation of dragstrips, dynos and big boost so we could focus on making the car work as a car and to do that I've been driving it daily to smooth out the rough edges. Believe me, it's the little things that take you forever because they need to be thought out.

So far 26-27 mpg on the freeway on tour is a frequent reality, and 20-21 in mixed commuting is usual. Performance at even 11 psi is great and
the handling beyond impressive. Without Bergman's suspension the car wouldn't be capable of the long legged Toyota which loves 4-7K rev ranges under boost.

I hope the press coverage makes us all proud no matter what you think of my foreign engine swap as there is really more Mopar DNA in this car than Toyota DNA! I will announce the book when we get closer to press time.

Nice looking ride. What brand are those seats?

Congrats Dave. Car looks great. And it's cool you dared to be different when building the car. That's what hot rodding is all about. I'm of the opinion that a cool car, is a cool car. Regardless of brand etc. I still love old Mopars, but dig your car!

Pat

You know, its not something I would personally do, but the build is top notch, and that's pretty cool. AND its actually being driven, that is also ver cool.

If this was a Ford or GM engine in this car you guys would be having a fit! Nice looking car, next time build a toyota.
