I have a 73 Duster that I am going to be starting a restoration on. Good thing about this car is that it does not have any matching numbers so I can do what I want with it. It is a 318 car. I am just going to be building this car to flip to make some money so I can finish my 70 duster. I have been building cars for well over 20 years so I can pretty much restore all of a car without paying anyone to do anything. With that being said, what do you think would be a more popular color combo for resale purposes? It is originally a petty blue car, with black interior, or do I go with the triple black theme? Black with matte black stripes and black interior.

Black with matt stripes is cool if it came that way. Otherwise its getting old. I would stay with the blue. Original color is a could selling point especially if it is a bright color. I would stay with blue. Black cars need white or colored side stripes. Matt on black is for a very small crowd that likes it. You see very few done like this and there could be a reason. Matt stripes may be a sale breaker. The graphics of the era made these cars stand out compared to others without the graphics . Why hide them. Just my opinion.

I'd go b5 as stated, but also you may get more going petty blue.

I think Petty blue is an "acquired" taste ...I'd go with your black thought ...just saying if your selling it .. (P.S. I am a huge Petty fan since w a y back)...just so I don't get beat on ..

42 percent of Americans are fans of blue, as are 47 percent of Germans and 44 percent of Brazilians.
Overall, 40 percent of people worldwide picked blue as their favorite color.
The second most favorite color is purple, which was chosen by only 14 percent worldwide.

and Doug, that's one of the reasons I chose Black, besides I'm partial to being different and I never owned a Black bike..

off topic but is that a 68-69 GTO on a 4x4 chassis in that pic LOL

I voted for Petty Blue.. but if there's no fender tag how do you know it's the original color?

Don't change it!

TB3 is a rare color. It is just as sought after as any other high impact color.

Painting the car black would be fine on a color that wasn't so desirable. That would be like painting a GY3 car or an FJ6 car black or Plum Crazy, because you weren't fond of yellow or green.

A friend has two original black 2dr plymouth savoy post sedans. He wanted to paint them different colors. I couldn't let him. That's a sought after color on those cars.

I'd never change any rare color car. It will hold more value as a sale, if it's legit on the tag and is really Petty Blue. Someone wants a petty blue car. I'd drive one.

BTW, don't paint it black unless the body is straight as an arrow and if it were, I would paint it the color it was..

I'd keep it Petty Blue. I've seen that color a lot more lately, seems like its gaining favor. Keeps it different from all the Plum Crazy and GoMango cars out there. Plus its a solid color, so easy to spray. I think the new Mustang's are bringing it back in popularity, I see a lot of the new Mustangs painted a similar color so I think its gaining traction all around, people are getting used to seeing it.

B5, while also a very nice color, has metallic in it. Which makes it look great, but it also makes it harder, and more expensive, to paint. Any runs or defects have to be sanded and resprayed because the metallic flecks in the paint will show up where a run used to be even after its sanded out. I like B5, but you might want to check with your paint and body guy first. And there's a lot of B5 cars out there already.

I love black cars, but its a horrible color for resale. Harder to take good pictures of, and MUCH harder to do bodywork for. Shows absolutely everything. At least one of my cars will end up black, but not because I'm trying to sell it.

neither. black car = body work will show every possible imperfection.

go with a light color you like, unless you have a real good some bich of a body guy...

so light color the body will look much better to the untrained eye.

Your car to do whatever you want with, but if the original had a good color to start with, I keep it that way. Plus if there are any parts you are not going to repaint like the trunk, saves time and money.

I have painted a lot of cars over the years and know how black can be, I just thought that was a popular way to go. As far as painting metallics, I too have painted a ton, and actually have done a lot of candy colors, which is the hardest colors to paint. Prices for B5 compared to petty blue are also minimal cost wise to me as I get paint at 20% less than body shop prices. I have owned 3 body shops over the years so I am pretty well versed in painting techniques. Petty blue is around $25 less per gallon than B5. Inside trunk and engine bay will all be painted as well. Thanks for all the input so far.

I wonder way....
What ever way you do it i am sure it will look great....
Good Luck.

PB7 Patriot Blue Clearcoat...If I am going to buy a car you do that is not numbers matching, I really don't want a color other people have. Blue is safe. A lot of people like it. Black is a pain in the butt to keep clean. My truck is a PB7 Ram 1500 with a silver bottom. With 20" chrome wheels and chrome bumpers I think it looks sharp. I think if you shot the grill black, body blue, and painted the rear panel silver and put a silver stripe on it that it would look great. But I am anything but traditional and someone is bound to have a stroke at my suggestion! Good luck

How can you not love Black?
