I have a small crack on my 6 bangers exhaust manifold and I'm wondering if I can fix it without replacing it completely. I'm thinking JB weld or some other such backyard mechanic repair. Will it even work?

I'm guessing you could have the crack welded, but welding cast iron is pretty challenging and it would probably be pretty costly. Anything less that welding it probably wouldn't hold up for long. You might be better off just picking up another one from a scrap yard or someone who has an extra one on FABO and replacing the whole thing.

Try calling these guys:

They shipped me a new repro to my front door in 4 days for just under $200 and it came with a big bag full of hardware and brackets (and they told me that they were out of stock and would have the manufacturer ship it directly).

I found that most of the used slant 6 exhaust manifolds either have cracks, or are gonna soon. The new ones will last longer.

History

Established in 1959
n 1959, E.L. "Spike" Havens understood the need for a product that would enable engine builders to renew the life of worn valve springs. Spike invented, patented, and launched the manufacturing of the VSI, the Valve Spring Insert. Designed with heat slashing serrations, VSI still remains a truly unique product in today's market. It is the primary element on which Silver Seal Products Co. has advanced to the forefront.

If you feel like a drive I have one for $45.00 . I'm in San Ramon .

Thanks,

Steve

After trying to salvage my original and another I got from a yard I ended up with one from Silver Seal also. Not bad. I did a little cleanup on the casting lines and a few other spots ( like the word China) with a grinder. I believe it is actually same one as Dorman. They also sell the manifold studs and brass freeze plugs for slant. It did come with the special hardware like triangle washers and the nuts and washers for the two ends, as well as the sheet metal heat riser. Did not include the long bolts that hold the manifolds together.

I had a cracked manifold on the engine in my boat. JB weld worked like a charm.

MUggy weld sux unless you have an acetelyne torch to heat the manifold up and then youll have to peen the crap out of it so it doesn't crack when it cools, or stick in sand so it cools slowly. Cudachick likes the 2 part exhaust repair liquid that's 15 bucks for .7oz or something outrageous. You can buy at parts store. I got one but shipping will be more than the part unless you come down to spring fling, I'll be there. You'll want to drill ends of crack before you fill it with repair that will stop crack from spreading with smallest drill you got and then grind out V to bare metal to give stuff some good base to stick to.

Not trying to be a smartass, but the jury is out on the new (made in China) Slant 6 manifolds. For your sake I hope it does last a long time, but I'm not sure it's a good quality piece.

Valid point. No doubt about it - If you can get an original in good condition it's probably your best option. But they are getting harder to find, and it's not a light piece if you've got to pay shipping. Appearance wise the China casting looks good (dimensions, thickness, no obvious defects, etc) Can't say what the metal quality is though. For me it seemed like a better way to go than a repaired one.

I have had good luck brazing them with a torch.I broke the one on my tractor in two and brazed it back together.

Exactly what I was going to post, heat it up cherry red then braze then cover
In sand immediately to cool really really slow and use plenty or sand to hold the heat in

clean it, V it, preheat it,stick weld it with nickel rod, peenit, slow cool[sand, oven]works for me everytime.

Do an internet search other parts sources ask $300 + for them.

BRAND NEW. 125 bucks free shippin. Bigger enforcing ribs than the original. Thicker castin than the original. You can SEE it's thicker. I don't care if it's flaming homo chinkesium. It's gotta be better than a busted one.
