I have a 1970 or later 18 spline 833 transmission.I see people asking $1000.00-$1200.00 for these all the time. Are these really bringing that kind of money?Should I ask around $850.00 for it or $1000.00 + ?

I bought a passion A-body aluminum case 18 spline for 1200. Used & happy with deal
I also bought a 69 b-body 18 spline off a Chevy guy for 400. Input was cut down. Happy with this also. Used the gears to build a A-body length trans.
I see them listed pretty high also. Not sure what they should be selling for but I think you could get it sold for your 800.ish. the replacement gear sets are that much alone.

One more thing the 70-74 B&E-bodys seem to bring more money. You could probably get more than you are thinking.

I guess the best thing to do is ask yourself if you would pay that for a transmission.

IMHO, it's all about condtion. Properly rebuilding and replacing worn parts in a 40 year old trans can get very expensive.

I hone in on the condition of the engaging teeth on the gears. That's the most expensive and commonly worn item. Brass syncros are inexpensive to replace. And bearings come with the kit. Gears themselves rarely wear or the get rust on them from storage. Syncronizer assemblies are tougher to inspect, but wear too and they are expensive.

New gears are around $150-180 each. So each gear you can't see in a used trans, deduct $180. With syncronizers, you sort of taking a chance.

I can't see paying $800 for bare trans. More like $400. If you can't see inside it, less.

I paid $250 for a 2.44 1st gear '73 A-body trans. I got to open it up. Looked ok with oil on gears. But when I sprayed parts clean on the engaging teeth I could see they were rounded. Learned my lesson on what to look for.

autoxcuda I have seen 23 spline b body trannys sell for $400.00.I did find 1 18 spline for $900.00 and one $1200.00.I guess I will ask $1100.00 for it and see what happens.

Ok I talked to my buddy I got it from it has been turned into a crashbox was in a racecar and then his street car works good.So what do you think it is worth?

There was just a discussion on Moparts about crashboxes. They are a race trans. And they are mostly outdated for the racers who would competitively use one. So the buying audiance is much smaller. Nostalgia guys and some racers. http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=8085067&an=0&page=0#Post8085067

If you just found out it was a crash box, sounds like you haven't opened it up. Buyers need/want to see the details of the inside. Especially a race box and could be beaten and raced out. You just proved how important it is to open it up, you didn't know it was a crash box.

I think it's going to sell for less than a street trans.

I don't see why a similar 23 spline A-body trans' should sell for much than the B-body trans that you saw for $400.

I know it works good it was in a buddy's Challanger.I will have to open it up and take pics.

Being a Crash box is not a good thing when trying to sell a four speed at market value.
If it is built with red stripe gears they are hard to find and could help.

What would it cost to put syncronizers back in it? That's really the only difference from stock right?

gears and syncronizer assemblies and synco rings. Maybe/probably more stuff. Input, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and syncro assy. Check prices at http://www.passonperformance.com ...about $800 to $900 for just part alone! Will not make any money switching them over. You will probably loose money. Sell it like it is.

So I think the only guts that are really in common are the cluster gears.

If it ran good in your buddies challenger why is he getting rid of it?

And you are one of the few people I can think of that would be interested in a vintage speed part like this.

You have bought a crash box for your project?

Passon is blowing out fully rebuilt by Passon A-body overdrive trans for only $750 http://www.passonperformance.com/

Even though it's an overdrive that's going to affect the market on used street trans for now.

But a person considering a crash box would not also be considering a street overdrive trans. Two opposite ends of the market.

Those are 23 spline. They have rebuilt 18 spline for $1995.00

Oh crap, I'm totally sorry. Since it's an A-body forum and you said '70 and later street trans at first, I'm just thinking 23 spline. As opposed to a '68 S/S 18 spline A-body trans. My bad for not reading you post closely enough.

That's changes a lot! Especially before when you thought it was a street trans. B/E body street 18 spline seems to be $750-$1000 selling trans like in your original post. Dates on trans will make a difference in $$. 72 model year trans would be least valuable.

Is it an A-body 18 spline or B/E body??

B/E 18 spline..

If it was originally a production line 18 spline main case installed in a 1970-1972 440/440-6/Hemi car the case might add value as opposed to being just a crash box B/E trans.

Get all stamped numbers and casting dates on main case and housing.

No, my transmissions are not been slick shifted or have the red stripe gears, still stock gear sets.
1 is going in a street driven barracuda so i will leave it as passion built it, and the other I have plans to have
Liberty gear face plate the trans. Not to concerned about keeping this one streetable.
I would be interested in seeing what is inside his 18 spline to see what he's got. May or may not be red stripes?

Jim could we get a look inside that trans? And some #'s also. You never know could be a rare transmission?

I have to dig it out of the shed.Maybe it could help out on that trade we are thinking about ssba.
